Jack Jones at the Bridgewater Hall, Manchester.

Post by LiamJames » Wed Oct 18, 2006 3:38 pm

Hello all. This is the first time I have left a message on one of these boards, but it seems straight forward enough!

I went to see Jack Jones at the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester on Sunday 8th October. He was absolutely brilliant!
Not only does he have a great voice but he also has such a great sense of humour.
It seems a shame that I was probably the youngest member of the audience (only 22) and that many people of my generation are yet to discover the nostalgia and sophistication of the great artists.
He paid tribute to Tony Bennett which I have noticed he is in the spotlight this month. Another living legend, he played at the same venue a couple of years ago, but unfortunately I missed it. However Jack sang some of his most popular hits like “The shadow of your smile” and “I left my heart in San Francisco”

The highlight of the night for me was when he sang his signature song “Wives & Lovers”. Everyone in the audience had a great reaction when he began this song. He introduced it saying “and now for the tune that made me popular here in the UK” at which point the audience applauded as the song intro began.

Overall it was a magnificent evening. He sang more love songs than big band swing, as the theme of the night was romance. I can’t wait to see him again.

My favourate CD at the moment is the rare Monro. I haven’t stopped playing it since I won it in last month prize draw. I am extremely grateful to Michele! I have never won anything in my life until now!!! I can’t wait to hear Matt Monro’s Spanish recordings CD when that comes out. Love the site, keep up the great work!

Welcome to the forum, Liam. It's a lively one as you can see, with much cut and thrust of debate. And there are older and not so older members too.

Hi Liam,

I too would like to welcome you to Matt's forum.
Jack Jones is a GREAT singer. We have a really nice JJ CD which Marks and Spencer released earlier in the year. It contains all of the best songs that JJ has released and is a very good price as well.
Looking at the number of times everyone has viewed JJ artist section, it looks like he is one of the most popular artists here right now...other than Matt of course! 8)

Hi all,
Tony Hadley was on "Breakfast" this morning talking about his new CD "Passing Strangers" which is moving into the swing/jazz mode.
Apparently, Tony is a big fan of Jack Jones, and they played Tony singing Jack's hit "Wives and Lovers".
Tony was at the final night (in England) of Jack's recent tour at Cadogan Hall.

Good to hear you enjoyed Jack in concert in Manchester, Liam - and welcome to the forum.
It's nice to see more young people appreciating great music. I took my two sons to see JJ when he was here last year and they were really blown away by the power of his voice and amazing vocal range.

Thank you everyone!

Wow! Thank you all so much for your kind and welcoming comments. I would have replied sooner, only the computer has been playing up. I’m sure this computer has a mind of its own…

It’s fantastic to have a web site like this that is devoted to who, I believe, the greatest singer the world has ever known, Matt Monro!
I have an extensive CD collection, the majority of which are by Matt Monro plus the recent DVD releases.
We are so lucky that he left so many marvellous recordings behind him. What a legend!
In response to other comments, I do think more younger people need to discover this kind of music.
I, being a huge James Bond fan, discovered Matt Monro with his title song “From Russia with love” and my admiration started there. I was very lucky to discover this exceptional singer.
One of my favourite DVD’s at the moment is “An evening with Matt Monro”. I take it everyone here has seen it? He has such charisma in his performance. Can you think of anyone present day that even comes close to such talent? I’m sorry to say I don’t think it will ever be possible…

It’s great to see so many people here. I was really surprised that so many of you replied to my message. Thanks again!
Oh, this bears no resemblance to the topic of Jack Jones… have I written this in the wrong place? You would think someone of my age would know all about this sort of thing, but I’m a real technophobe!!

Anyway, I hope you are all well and providing the PC doesn’t go on strike again, I look forward to reading all your messages.

Thanks for your post again Liam. I would just like to add that ..............................I don't wan't anyone to come close to Matts talent, as Matt IS the greatest................................................no one can EVER come close to him in my opinion, especially any of todays performers. One or two from the past came within about 100 yards, but NO closer than that. (One other singer I adore though is Frances Langford, whose voice is SUPERB) she IS the greatest ever female singer in my opinion. I only discovered Frances about 18 months ago (thankfully).

A Very Happy 69th Birthday today to Jack Jones. This year is also his 50th Anniversary in Show Business, so many congratulations too!
2007 would also have been the year of his dad Allan Jones's 100th birthday. So all in all, a very special year for Jack. :D :D

Hi Marian--thanks for the reminder of Jack's birthday, and 50th Anniversary. It takes an exceptional talent to remain popular for so many years.
