Songs For Mother's Day

Post by Michele Monro » Fri Mar 02, 2007 1:02 am

If you could select one song and wrap it up for Mother's Day, what would it be and why? You can choose the same song as someone else as long as your reasons are different.

Mother's Day

Post by Michele Monro » Fri Mar 02, 2007 1:08 am

My mum sees me through my darkest days, she is there when I need a shoulder to cry on, she is my sunshine on the gloomiest days, my tissue to wipe the tears, my tickle stick when I need to smile, my comfort when I need a hug, my bank when I need a loan, my band aid when I hurt, my umbrella in the rain, my comfort blanket on the coldest days.

She is all things and I love her very much

I think it would have to be Portrait Of My Love Michele. This was one of the first tracks I heard of your Dad's, it was on a compilation cassette called Songs From The Heart and featured many artists incliding Brenda Lee and Malcolm Roberts. I remember playing it and when it came to Portrait I said to my mum, this is nice, and she said "ah, yes, Matt Monro, he was a lovely singer". I will always remember her saying that, and always think of her when I play the song, although it is seven years nearly since she died I always associate the song with her, and she started me off on this wonderful journey of Matt's music. I hope this makes sense.

What lovely story's and tributes from Michele and John.
My chosen song can only be "Softly As I Leave You"..
My brother died Five years ago and Matt was his favourite singer and so when my mother died just a year and a half after, there was no hesitation in the choosing of this song at my mum's funeral, even though the words are meant to be from a dying man to his wife.
Mothers are irreplaceable, nothing evokes memories more than music, particularly when no day is ever quite the same again without them.
Mothers should be cherished not only on Mothers Day but every day. :)

My Mum was widowed at 46, over 45 years ago. My little sister was just 4. It was not till many years later that I realised how young that was, to be left without a husband.
My mum worked hard to keep the family together, had 3 jobs, getting up at 4 o'clock every morning, and was still working at 68 , when she caught a cold, which turned into flu, and in less than a week, she had died. This was 24 years ago.
So I guess the song that makes me think of my mum, and my dad too, is "Memories of You", because you never forget your mum and your dad, no matter how long they have been gone.

Although there are so many beautiful songs, I would just like it to be "I Love You Because".
The words sum up everything I felt for my Mum, and still do even now, 32 years later.
She died suddenly of a heart attack completely out of the blue, just two weeks before our younger son was born.
I missed her so much then.. and always will do.

Marian.

An interesting and thought provoking thread. I have always been close to my Mum, and speak to her frequently. She always had music on when I was younger, although she doesn't listen to so much now. She blames my dad for 'hogging' the stereo to listen to football on the radio (no Sky in their house!) My Mum has influenced my taste in music, introducing me to many wonderful singers including Eydie Gorme, Doris Day and Dinah Shore and of course Matt. She loves 'My kind of girl' and 'You've got possibilities' in particular'.

But the song that I will always make me think of her is 'Sweet Caroline' by Neil Diamond - she just loves it and still dances and sings along to it. I can picture her singing it in different houses, in different clothes, even different haircuts and will always associate it with her.

Even reading this thread makes me aware that I am very lucky to still have my parents with me. I am at the age now where I've realised that Mum and Dad won't be here forever, and there the age where they've started telling me  Of course, that makes me sad. But it also gives me the wisdom to try and appreciate all the time that I have left to spend with them.

I think everyone is in agreement that it is with great affection we think of our parents, my mother too, Marian, died very suddenly at 67 and still miss her very much and think of her every day, my father is still with us at the age of 85 and lives just 2 doors away.

This mothers day is gonna be hard.......... first without mum....... it would have to be *Softly as I leave you* ........ the one we played at mums funeral. (kind of cool cos we picked to have the curtain come down during the song, rather than have her coffin trundle off like unclaimed baggage at the airport :? )

Yeah........... softly as I leave you.......... and she did leave.. softly. :)

Song For Mother's Day

Post by Sheila H-B » Sun Mar 11, 2007 3:02 pm

I guess my choice for Mother's Day, would have to be "Jean", as that is her name. My Mum often borrows the DVDs and CDs my daughter and I have of Matt's recordings.

Hi Sheila, nice to see your posting and your picture too.
Jean is a beautiful song. Now what's a nicer way of spoiling mum on Mothers day with Matt's latest CD "From Matt With Love." :) The perfect gift. :) :)
