Matt Monro on Alan Titchmarsh's Melodies For You

Post by paul jh » Thu Mar 15, 2007 1:10 am

Whilst working late tonight, rather than listening to Radio 1 or the regular programmes on Radio 2, I thought that Alan Titchmarsh's lovely mix of music would inspire me. I didn't consult the programme listing. Then all of a sudden he talks about a bus driver who became a singer. Of course, it's Matt Monro. Alan gives him a wonderful compliment before and after the song.

Be sure to listen to the entire programme. I think Alan Titchmarsh's programme is superb; I love his insights into classical music, film music, musicals, and operetta. Earlier he played an excerpt from Elgar's Cello Concerto. How good can this get: Sir Edward Elgar and Matt Monro in the same radio programme!

I purposely didn't tell you the song because I want all of you to "listen again" to this excellent programme. He also plays gems from The King And I, Iolanthe, Pal Joey, Hello Dolly, and La traviata---and closes with Brahms' beautiful and moving How Lovely Are Thy Dwellings.

Alan played Matt Monro again on his Melodies For You programme this past Sunday. We can safely say that Matt Monro is one of his favourites and most played singers on his Sunday programme. This time he played:

If I Never Sing Another Song

Nice to hear a different Matt Monro song played on Radio 2 than the usual. Alan mentioned Winifred Atwell this time; he remembers seeing her in Blackpool.
