Been to Carmel, the town where Clint Eastwood was Mayor, he owns the Hogs Breath Inn there. Very attractive, quaint place. We were told none of the properties there is numbered. :? :? Must make life difficult for the postman

I'm glad you all like the US so much. I guess I didn't find Carmel particularly attractive or interesting and certainly not "exquisite" --- except that Doris Day lives there! I agree that the 17 Mile Drive at Pebble Beach is lovely, but certainly not on any of my list of top sites or drives. I'd recommend you ride the bus for one pound around Guernsey. There you will find spectacular scenery. Perhaps I'm biased because I can get good newspapers there, and they have M & S, Boots, Woolworths, and a new HMV.

Thanks for the correction on the Lake District, Marian. I'm not sure why I wrote Lakes, perhaps it was a typo or I didn't know the difference! I think there's a Lakes District in New Hampshire.

Hi Marian

I also went to Carmel for the simple reason to have a tonic water in Clint's Hogs Breath Inn, but it had closed down and Clint had opened Mission Ranch instead, which was a really lovely place, there was a piano bar there along with some very nice houses were you could stay for a holiday.
I loved it.
