Tonight's DVD is Dreamgirls. Beyonce as Diana Ross should be interesting.

Dreamgirls

Post by Terence Lee » Mon Apr 23, 2007 5:57 pm

Dreamgirls was a loud experience with dynamic singing coming out of my 6 speakers. Jennifer Hudson's singing voice was a revelation. How could any mortal possess a voice like that? However by the time the film ended, I had an overkill of that spectacular voice. But she acted well and deserved her Oscar. Beyonce was subdued in both acting and singing voice at the beginning of the movie. But she comes into her own with an effective ballad titled "Listen" towards the end of the movie although I felt she was singing as Beyonce and not her character Deena. A worthy watch....it helps if you like the Motown sound.

Thanks for the advice Terry - I think I'll wait for it come out on DVD. Its had mixed reviews, mainly because of the alleged depiction of Diana ROss. I like Beyonce's acting - she was brilliant as Foxy Cleopatra (a whole lotta woman!) in Austin Powers 'Goldmember'!

Ooh - talking of Motown, 'Sister Act' was on tv in the UK yesterday - its one of my favourite films. I particularly love the opening scene in the Las Vegas lounge with the medley of songs there. I searched for ages to find the original version of 'I will follow him' only to find it sung by a 15 year old school girl (Peggy March). It just didn't sound the same!

Yes, Mike I never get tired of watching Sister Act, it is one of those films you can watch over again, I don't think the sequel was as good though, but saying that, they rarely are!

As a boy, I used to have a 45 of "I Will Follow Him". The singer was billed as Little Peggy March!
It was catchy......

Hi Terence

Thanks for the review of Dreamgirls, one to watch for me, I think, as I love Motown.
I watched Apocalypto the other week, Mel Gibson's film.
Weak story, but by gum I enjoyed the movie.
I got really carried away by the film and thought it worked as a (very gruesome) action film.
As I say, the plotline was a bit feeble, but still well worth a look - but only if you like your steak cooked 'rare' - not for the faint hearted!

hi John - you are right about Sister Act II - more like 'Kids from Fame'. But Sister Act 1 is a real feelgood film. Maggie Smith is brilliant but Whoppi Goldberg was the star of course. We were discussing the other day whether or noth that was her real singing voice or whether the songs were dubbed by someone else.

Terence - you are right that Little Peggy march sang this song - she was the daughter of US Army officer and I believe that it was recorded when she lived in Europe. It made it to the top of the US Billboard chart but she never had another chart hit amd this song never made the UK charts either. She was a singer in the Brenda Lee/Helen Shapiro mould. Ihad never heard the original, but on the strength of the Sister Act soundtrack I bouught it on single for £10 from the rare Records section at Beanos record store in Croydon. I was a tad disappointed that it wasn't sung in the motown style!

Tonight, my friends and I watched Liza Minnelli in her latest movie "The OH In Ohio". I suppose I shouldn't really call it a Liza Minnelli movie since she only appears in it for 5 minutes. But she stole the show playing a sexual therapist wearing a blonde wig ala Lucky Lady. The jokes are a-plenty in this comedy and most of them are sexual ones. Has anyone seen this hilarious film?

L & H - thats interesting about Peggy March - I really had never come across her apart from that one single! Maybe she sings it like Whoopi did in the film - in a gold dress with a huge wig!

Finally got round to watching Ladies In Lavender last night, brilliant performances by Maggie Smith and Judi Dench, I thought Miriam Margoyles was very good too. Very enjoyable british film. :D

is that the one with Will Young in it? He comes into the shop quite a lot - very polite young man. Judi Dench does too - very surreal watching her queue up to buy her Xmas Gifts last year. So normal! And Miriam Margoyles - I've sold her a cooker once .
