Hi all---I was listening to my IPod last night, and Dickie Valentine was singing---how many of you remember him---he was so popular at the time , but tragically died---it was in a car accident, I believe--He was singing

"Walking my baby back Home"

And I thought what a great song that would have been for Matt to sing--it's a good upbeat song, which Matt could do so brilliantly.

I actually think there is a slight similarity in one or two of Matt's pics to Dickie Valentine---can anyone else see that too?

Hi Marina44, it's nice to see your picture along with Hilary's, and yes, we can see what you mean about Dickie Valentine resembling Matt in one or two pictures. Dickie Valentine was very popular around the same time as David Whitfied, Ronnie Hilton, Malcolm Vaughan, and made regular appearances on TV in the Fifties and Sixties and had his own series with various guests. Peter Sellars was one.
Dickies most successful and most well known songs were, "All The Time And Everywhere" "The Finger Of Suspician" "Christmas Alphabet" "One More Sunrise" and "A Blossom Fell."
He used some comedy into his act, that was ok, but he also included impressions of several other singers, although frankly we wish he hadn't.
Sadly he died as the result of a car crash in 1971.

Hi Mariana44, hope you've got your pics back by now, :? :? and yes Terence " Just Loving You " that reached No 2 in the UK charts but No1 in Australia and New Zealand, would definitely be a perfect choice and even Anita's other song that she recorded in1968, "The Anniversary Waltz"
Anita Harris was particularly known for playing the nurse in the Carry On film, but she was multi talented and had a long and varied career.
Seemed to always have such a nice personality. :) :)

Hi all--yes thankfully you are all back in picture form now--just a "bleep" with my computer, I guess. "The Anniversary Waltz" would have been a lovely choice for Matt to sing.

But here is another one, by those great composers Alan and Marilyn Bergman-It may not have been around at the same time as Matt was singing--I have wonderful versions by Johnny Mathis, Barbra Streisand and Maureen McGovern [!st mention of Maureen that I have seen on this site}, and I think Matt would have given a superb interpretation of this song also

The Song is the very beautiful

"On My Way to you"

"So often as I wait for sleep, I find myself reciting,
The things I said or should have said, Like scenes that need rewriting"

They also wrote [amongst many others] "The Way we were"--i think Matt would have sung a brilliant version of that , too.

Hi Mariana44, glad you have the pics back again, :) this happened with us just recently with Norton Anti Virus, and after a day of frustration it suddenly appeared :?
Anyway yes Marian two more great songs that would have suited Matt " The Way We Were," and "On My Way To You" this song incidently
we have noticed is on one of Johnny Mathis's albums "How Do You Keep The Music Playing". what a beautiful song!!! it's one of our favourites also recorded superbly by both Al Martino and Tony Bennett.
This song would have been made for Matt. :) :)

The lyics are wonderful

Post by Terence Lee » Sat May 27, 2006 11:58 am

Hi Marian

On My Way To You was written in 1988 so Matt had no chance to sing it. But thanks for reminding me of this lovely song.

I particularly like these words "if I had changed a single day, what went amiss or went astray, I may have never found my way to you. I wouldn't change a thing that happened on my way to you."

It is such a romantic song!

Hi Terence, and Lena and Harry, I am glad you like my choice of songs, especially "On my way to you" , which is nowhere near as well-known as "The Way we were", even though it is a really lovely song--I love all the words to it, and the theme of the song. I am so glad you all know this gorgeous song. "How do you keep the music Playing" was a very popular song with all Mathis fans--I believe it came from a film, which I cannot recall at the moment. At one time Johnny finished his concerts with this song.

Hi all--Just going back to my previous mention of Marilyn and Alan Bergman's songs--I have just thought of another truly beautiful song that would have suited Matt's voice---Johnny Mathis has sung it in concert and, I have it on cd by Natalie Cole and Sergio Mendes----but I think that Matt would have given it something special too---

"Like A Lover"

"Like a lover, the morning sun slowly rises and kisses you awake
Your smile is soft and drowsy as you let it play upon your face
Oh how I dream I might be like the morning sun to you"

Hope someone else knows this lovely and,oh so romantic song.

Like a Lover

Post by Terence Lee » Sun May 28, 2006 12:35 am

Hi Marian

How Do You Keep The Music Playing was from the movie BEST FRIENDS starring I think, Goldie Hawn & Burt Reynolds.

Like A Lover started life in 1968 as O Cantador with music by Dory Caymmi.

The lyrics are sensual.......How I envy a cup that knows your lips - let it be me, my love.

And a table that feels your fingertips, let it be me.

Like a lover, the velvet moon shares your pillow and watches while you sleep. Its light arrives on tiptoe, gently taking you in its embrace. Oh, how I dream - I might be like the velvet moon to you.

What about Pieces Of Dreams or Little Boy Lost?
I would love to hear Matt's version.

Mariana44, and Terence, we confess we don't recall " Like A Lover or Pieces Of Dreams" so thats two more songs on our list for research, :) but these two we have no problem with, and we can just hear Matt singing both of them,

What about, " Almost Like Being In Love" from the appealing movie " Brigadoon,"
And this one from "The Godfather111 "To Each His Own," :)

medley

Post by Terence Lee » Sun May 28, 2006 10:00 am

Hi Lena & Harry

Dame Shirley Bassey still sings This Can't Be Love/Almost Like Being In Love as a medley and I can envisage Matt singing it and swinging it live in concert.

The definitive version for me so far is Judy Garland's at Carnegie Hall.
