Scott Walker

Post by jon » Wed May 23, 2007 2:42 pm

Did anyone see the programme on BBC1 last night about Scott Walker? Not sure if we have discussed him before. I have one of his solo albums - Scott Walker 2 - and I find his voice interesting, though I can only really listen to him in short doses of half-an-hour or so. I like his recording of "Joanna" and the Walker Brothers hits (apparently they were none of them brothers and not even called Walker). Not a stand-out singer for me but OK to dip into now and again.

We watched some of it Jon, mainly because we were intrigued by the fact that it took so long before his face finally appeared out of the semi-darkness. :? don't know what we were expecting.
Like all of us in the club, he'd got a little older. He had a nice voice and the brothers remembered mainly for "Joanna "and "The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Any more."

I too quite like Scott Walker, Joanna is also a favourite of mine too, and also The Lights of Cincinatti, but I find some of his songs rather depressing and a bit weird, hard to describe really, sort of dark, black, if you know what I mean. He recorded a really nice one called The Hills Of Yesterday though, and a version of Matt's The Me I Never Knew and Si Te Amo (the english version of Do I Love You).

According to a member on the Jack Jones forum, a cd came out by Scott Walker last year with a title track "Jolson and Jones." Apparently, the Jones mentioned, refers to singer Allan Jones, Jack's dad, and reference is made to the "Donkey Song".

"My Tears Will Fall Now That You're Gone,
I Can't Help But Cry, But I Must Go On" :(

"Joanna" is another favourite of mine also, I missed the program unfortunately but will try to catch the movie at the cinema.

The other Walkers Brothers song I really like is "No Regrets", there's something about the arrangement, the whole package of the song, that I love listening to.

I do mean "Donkey Serenade" Robert, but apparently it is referred to as "The Donkey Song" on this particular track. Just wondered if anyone knew the title of the CD? :? :?
Did you know that Jack when he was about nine years old, used to lead the donkey on the stage during his dad's performance? But it wasn't a donkey, it was a pony with stuck on ears!! I have a photo somewhere.
Marian
P.S. Actually, there's a photo on Allan Jones's website.

Liked his 'early'albums but then he went far too'way-out'for my taste. They also did a piece on Scott some time ago on BBC TWO 'THE CULTURE SHOW'.
