It was my brother who first saw Shirley Mike and as far as we remember she had been singing at the Astor Club in London's West End and he had heard of her appearing in a show with Al Read who was a popular comedian at that time, but it was this amazing Seventeen Year old Shirley that was the star of the show.

Oh Mein Papa another popular one of Eddie Calvert's Robert. This was the first instrumental recording to be awarded a gold disc.
He emigrated to South Africa in the Sixties and died in 1978 at the age of 56.

I also love Eddie's "John and Julie" from the film of the same name, I remember seeing it many years ago, about 2 young children who run away from home to see the Queen's coronation, they don't make films like that anymore.

Talking of "Oh Mein Papa", Roger Whittaker did a great version of this song, featuring on one of his live in concert videos. :)

Been listening to an early Petula Clark album this evening, songs including "The Little Shoemaker" and "Cold, Cold Heart". A lot of these songs I have never heard before, a bargain as well at £2.50 at a local market cd stall! :D

I remember "The Little Shoemaker" well John. In fact I have an old 78 with it on. I think it was the B side. Can't really recall the A side, though I've a feeling it was a song called "Romance in Rome".

Streisand live

Hi Marian

Have you played disc 2 of the live Streisand CDs?
What is your opinion of Unusual Way, taken from Maury Yeston's Fellini-inspired show, Nine?

If ever a song was written for Johnny Mathis, this is it. Do you agree?
