The New Seekers

Hi Everyone,

I recently found an old vinyl record that my dad had at home - "I'd like to teach the world to sing" by the New Seekers.
Even thou the single was not in good condition as it had a few scratches and hisses on it, I really liked this song.

Last week I was in HMV and came across a CD which was the best of The New Seekers. Well since then I have become a fan and love all the lovely songs on this CD.

My most favourites are "Beg, steal and borrow, I'd like to teach the world to sing" and "Circles".

Reading through the CD booklet I see that they were only around for four short years - 1970 - 1974 but they did have several top ten hits during that time and three number one singles.

The New Seekers also represented the UK in the Eurovision Song Contest during the 70's. Like Matt and Sir Cliff Richard, they came second!

Does anyone remember them and if so, what songs do you like?
I wonder what they are doing now? Anyway, I love this CD which I bought for a very expensive £5.00! :wink: :lol: :D

Hi Hilary

I have The Very Best Of The New Seekers on CD which I bought in 1996. I have only played it once but I remember the songs made me happy especially What Have They Done To My Song Ma and Never Ending Song Of Love. Must spin the CD again soon.

The Seekers were the original group and predecessors of The New Seekers. They were an Australian group formed in 1962 who sang folk type songs and were very popular for much of the sixties.
Lead singer was Judith Durham, and other group members were Athol Guy, Keith Potger and Bruce Woodley. Some of their most well known songs are "Morningtown Ride," "I'll Never find Another You" and "Georgy Girl" from the film, plus many others.
When the group split up in 1969, Keith Potger went on to form The New Seekers. Two of the girls of the group were Eve Graham and Lyn Paul.
Judith Durham went on to make a successful career as a solo artist.
"I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing" by The New Seekers became best known as an ad for Coca Cola.

Well you live and learn - I never realised that the New Seekers had any of the The Seekers in it at all!

Of course, as a 70s child, I remember the New Seekers, they were pretty popular for a few years. Of course, the coke advert was very famous and that song was everywhere.

Like Hilary, one of my favourites was the Eurovision entry, Beg, steal or borrow. This was a classic piece of 1970s Euro music, and deserved to do better. Losing to Luxembourg in 1972 to Vicky Leandros singing Apres Toi.

Judith Durham lead singer with The Seekers has such a beautiful voice, had no problem going solo after the split. We have Two or Three of their albums and some 45 rpms of the New Seekers. Both popular groups. :lol: :cry:

Yes, I think I have said before I am a big fan of the Seekers, but I also do like The New Seekers as well, "Never Ending Song Of Love" was a good one. :D

Was it the New Seekers who sang--"I get a little sentimental over you"--I really like that song.

I remember the New Seekers very well....very good group in their time ! im 46 and remember them in my good ole school days eeeekkkk :shock:

The song you like "I like to teach the world to sing" was also actually used on the coka cola advert too !! .....showing my age now hahaha :oops:

Oh by the way ! how is Sunny Oxfordshire !!!! if it was anything like NOT so sunny North Wales yesterday with all that rain !!!!!! :x damn I feel like a tadpole now hehehe....must admit its lovely and sunny today tho :D

Like others here, I well remember the New Seekers and their interminable Coke advert. OK group, I guess but I don't have any of their music. I remember the girls in it - one blone, one brunette, I think - but not the guys. Funny, that.

Lyn Paul came from around these parts I believe. Went out with Jack Jones for a while many years ago.
We saw Lyn Paul several years back in the lead in "Blood Brothers" at the Hexagon in Reading. She was excellent!!! :lol: :lol:
