Streisand honoured!

Post by Terence Lee » Fri Jun 29, 2007 1:47 pm

PARIS -- Barbra Streisand performed her first-ever concert in France this week and was rewarded with a medal of the Legion of Honor.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy awarded the medal to Streisand in a ceremony Thursday, the first time he has bestowed the honor since taking over from Jacques Chirac last month.

"You are the America that we love," said Sarkozy, who is seen as more U.S.-friendly than Chirac. "Women like you... do a lot to bring our two peoples together."

Onlookers included French crooner Charles Aznavour and actor Alain Delon.

Sarkozy's wife, Cecilia, went to Streisand's sole concert in France, at Paris' Bercy stadium Tuesday.

Streisand told Sarkozy, a conservative, that he reminded her of former U.S. Presidents Kennedy and Clinton, "who appreciated art and recognized the importance of the arts in the world."

"I am deeply honored to be joining the playwrights, heads of state, artists and leaders who have accepted this honor before me," Streisand, 65, said in a statement. "I leave with a sense of inspiration and responsibility as an artist to always reflect the truth and as a citizen to try and create a world of justice, compassion, equality and peace -- one with a little more music and a little more joy."

Created by Napoleon Bonaparte in the early 19th century, the Legion of Honor is France's elite national merit society. Although foreigners cannot be officially inducted into the Legion, they are routinely made honorary recipients. Recent honorees include Jerry Lewis, Valentino and Norman Mailer.

I wonder how much money the artists in the 60's made, when singles were about 6 shilling's - roughly 30p

Barbra cancels concert

Post by Terence Lee » Tue Jul 03, 2007 2:46 pm

Stockholm - US singer Barbra Streisand has cancelled her planned concert in Stockholm this week on medical advice, organizer's said Monday. Tour organizer, Concert Productions International, issued a statement saying doctors had advised Streisand, 65, to rest her voice.

In a statement published in Swedish, Streisand said she was "disappointed" over the development and "sad to let her fans down."

Sold tickets for the Wednesday concert that was to be staged in Stockholm's landmark Globe Arena would be refunded.

Streisand's most recent concert on her ongoing European Tour was Saturday in Berlin - her first ever in Germany. Her next scheduled date was July 10 in Manchester, England.

The tour opened in Zurich, Switzerland on June 18. Initial plans had suggested she would open her tour in Rome on June 15, but these were scrapped.

Storms and rain forced the singer to postpone her outdoor performance in Vienna on June 21, but conditions improved sufficiently the next day for the concert to be held.

July 2, 2007 - 'Barbra Streisand European Tour 2007' promoter, Concert Productions International, regretfully announces the cancellation of the July 4th Stockholm show. Following doctor's advice, Streisand has been ordered to rest her voice for several days after developing a sore throat. The tour will now move on to Manchester where she is expected to perform as scheduled on July 10.

"I am disappointed at this unfortunate turn of events and so saddened to disappoint my fans. I was so looking forward to performing in the beautiful city of Stockholm" said Streisand.

She'll be able to rest her voice over here then Terence, as her concert's are bound to be cancelled, as it hasn't stopped raining like cats and dogs for the past two months   even a lot of roofs have been leaking.

The weather sounds terrible Robert but is it like that too in Manchester? MY friend reports good weather in Cambridge and he is driving to Manchester for the concert.

A block of seats (101) right next to the stage has just been opened for next weeks show in Manchester. The seats are only £75 and you are almost in touching distance from the supreme being!

I have just contacted 3 of my Manchester friends about this--They have replied that this would be close to the stage, as it is under their "Chaity Box" [they run a charity in Manchester for children called "When you wish upon a star"]

I would love to get up to Manchester, as feasibly I could, as I could get up there in under 4 hours, and I have a good friend who would put me up.

However--just yesterday, I heard some devastating news about my 53 year old brother in law who is seriously ill in hospital, and quite honestly, at the moment, I do not want to go too far away from home.

Or I would definately consider it--if all the tickets had not been sold yet !!

it's only 4 hours away

Post by Terence Lee » Wed Jul 04, 2007 7:04 pm

Hi Marian

Manchester is only 4 hours away which means you won't be too far away from home. I am sorry to hear your bro-in-law is ill but being so young I am sure he will be alright.

75 pounds to see Streisand up close is such a good bargain.......go for it!

If you go on TicketmasterUK and pull up the Manchester date, there's a section on the page to enter in a PROMO/DISCOUNT CODE.

This may refer to the initial ad when there was a promo code per the Manchester evening news paper some weeks ago. Perhaps your friends have a copy and can get you the code?

Hi Terence-I really want to do as you suggest, but honestly, my brother in law is very seriously ill. I could not leave home now. My family has to come first, at this time.

Saw Pavarotti at The MEN Arena-what an awful venue!
No wonder when you reach Manchester city centre-it is very difficult to locate!

Yes, I have to agree that the MENA is just awful--difficult to get to, and even worse to get into---up a huge steep flight of steps--then when you get inside, down an even steeper set of steps to the arena seating, without any handrails---I was terrified of tripping and falling all the way to the bottom-it was a long way down-and I am frankly amazed that noone has ever done that-well not to my knowledge , anyway.

It has to be someone very special to get me to go to that place.
