Terrorist threat

Post by Terence Lee » Sun Jul 01, 2007 9:23 am

Everyone in London please be careful and extra vigilant. Keep away from suspicious-looking people, parcels, baggage left unattended, etc.

I am glad Marian is not travelling to London for the Barbra concert although we should not let them win by living in fear.

Anyone living or working in or near London has been living with this threat for many years--when I was working in London, over 15 years ago, there were many bombs and bomb threats in London, and it can be very frightening.

However, as you say, Terence, the only way to deal with it is to carry on as normally as possible, difficult though that may be.

It was just a miracle that these last few bombs in London and Glasgow did not explode.

Nobody is safe Terence, as Glasgow is hundreds of miles from London, and look what happened there yesterday

Robert is correct--this sort of thing can happen just about anywhere, at any time. That is very frightening.

We are told to be extra vigilant, but at the same time to go about our business and get on with our lives and not let these evil people win.
Well thanks very much. Is there any choice..???
Al least during WW2 we had the warning siren.

I can't understand why some of these immigrants living a cozy life in UK would be doing all this when so many deserving cases can't even get PR status and would be grateful and contribute productively if ever they were accorded that status.

Thankfully, our wonderful emergency services saved many from these cowardly attacks this time anyway. I'm sure our grateful thanks go out to them all.

In the Multicultural Society that we live in I find that it rather strange to have the situation in this country that when a free speaking person from that native soil mentions injustice and terrorism it becomes a race motivated issue, however when someone from foriegn soil speaks about injustice and not being understood by the Indigenous people it is free speach.
I have no issues with any other people from wherever however I rather think that to live in the country of another origin would mean to embrace their culture and their way of life or become left out of daily life from choice.
We in this country however are expected to change our way of life, build schools and places of worship isolated from the main community. Does this happen in other countrys?
We have a life strongly fought for and defended by our forefathers in countless wars in the name of freedom for all.

I am not racist nor am I anti immigration, I have many friends of different faiths and teachings, Imjust a working man who wants the best I can provide for my Family and want them to be safe in this country.
Patriotism should be a word bringing pride in the culture and history of this land not hidden in the Ramblings of Politicians.

I hope you are all well and look forward to meeting some of you at the upcoming Matt Jnr concert tour :P

I realise this isnt the place for debate on this issue and appologise if i have caused offence

It's the price we innocent British Law-abiding citizens are having to pay for the do-gooders and the incompetent twits who have left the door ajar with "Walk This Way " on it for anyone wishing to stroll in and without the buffoons making the necessary stringent checks.

I think most of us are on your side with this issue Steve. I don't mind letting anyone in, as long, as L&H say, everything is checked out beforehand. Now looks what's happened, it's like opening a very large can of worms

Been busy at work with Summer Sales so not really read this thread. I have lived and worked in London for nearly 25 years now, and you do get used to the terror threats. As Mariana44 pointed out, we've had numerous bombings over the years - I remember the Canary Wharf bomb, my brother was in London the day the IRA bomb went off in Hyde Park, and I also remember the Harrods bombs, Selfridges in the 70s. It hasn't always been those from overseas that wanted to blow us up, its been those on our own doorstep. More recently, with 7/7 and now these recent terror attacks/plots, we are facing a new type of attack that even the highest levels of vigilance cannot prevent, and its now the case that we are heavily reliant on intelligence - and also a lot of luck! It now seems that both of the devices planted in London were attempted to be triggered by mobile phone, but that these devices failed to go off. And if one of them hadn't been spotted by an ambulance crew in the vicinity, who knows what may have happened.

As far as this being the result of our 'open door' policy, I think you have to bear in mind that the number of people who are actually involved in these attrocities are a tiny minority. And it appears that those planning the latest attacks were all highly educated, and doctors, something that we are crying out for in this country, where we seem happier that our children strive to become pop stars and footballers, than following real careers! We need economic migrants to keep the most basic services running (public transport, hospitality, retail, labouring, fruit picking) as so many jobs are now deemed 'beneath us'!
Michael

Here I go again, I hear those trumpets blow again.......
