What Movies Have Been Playing On Your DVD/Video Lately?
Hi Marian
I'd love to tell you a little more of the movie, especially if I can encourage you to go and see it!
It is a work of 'fiction', however it does say that it is based on real events.
Work that one out!!!
Anyway, it is an account of Beethoven writing his 9th Symphony.
Looking through the eyes of a young girl who is sent to work with the maestro during this time, the film tries to show us how Beethoven viewed his talent & the writing process.
If Peter knows anything of Beethoven, the film will not tell him anything new, but if he would like to hear LVB's music in the theatre, it is worth the entrance fee alone for that.
The film has been criticised for being dull (however I didn't find it dull at all - but I do LOVE Beethoven) and Ed Harris' over the top performance - but again, Harris portrays Beethoven exactly as I imagine him to of been, gruff & crude on the outside, but capable of producing musical beauty from within.
I enjoyed the Gary Oldman film of Beethoven - Immortal Beloved - more than 'Copying Beethoven' - but it's still a worthy effort I think.
It's a 12 certificate, for being a bit rude in places, but I wouldn't of thought there was anything likely to offend.
I hope you get to see it.
It is a European movie, and therefore may not appear at you local multiplex, (they might be too busy showing 'The Simpsons & Transformers) so maybe there is an small independant cinema near you...?
I do hope you go, if you manage to see it, I'd be interested in your & Peter's appraisal.

Many thanks for your comments and appraisal of the film Gray. I'm sure Peter would enjoy it. We will certainly keep a look out for it around the Reading area.
As someone who has already seen The Simpsons and Transformers ( you can tell we have grandchildren!) it would be nice to see something more intellectually challenging.

'The Simpsons' - my kids haven't seen this film but have seen a trailer where Homer says 'spider pig, spider pig...' whilst lifting a pig to the ceiling

If I've heard the words 'spider pig' once this summer, I must of heard it uttered by my children a thousand times!!

Good luck with tracking down 'Copying Beethoven'!

I picked up Hitchcock's 'Suspicion' at a carboot sale yesterday on dvd for a quid.
Loads of extra's on the disc so that is a real bargain.
Also bought a Hitchcock 5 disc dvd set for twelve pounds in the HMV sale, it included:
'North by Northwest', 'The Wrong Man', 'I Confess', 'Stage Fright' & 'Strangers on a Train'.

Gray, I was interested in your comments about "Copying Beethoven". I was wondering what this would be like and your recommendation has persuaded me to see the film.
Does anyone remember a film called "Night of the Demon" starring Dana Andrews? It was made in 1957 in black and white and is quite atmospheric and scary. I remember watching it years ago as a child on TV and a friend recently copied it from video onto DVD for me (unfortunately it is not available to buy on DVD).

Hi Jon
I hope you enjoy 'Copying Beethoven'
'Night of the Demon' is a very famous spooky movie, although I have never seen it.
I once went to a Sci-Fi/Horror Film Festival and loads of people had t-shirts displaying the film's poster, so I think it may have some sort of cult status?
Don't know if you've ever seen The Rocky Horror Picture Show but Dana Andrews in Night of the Demon gets a mention in the lyrics to the title song.
I hope to see 'Night of the Demon' one day, you are correct about it not being available on Region 2 dvd
But, I've noticed it is possible to import the Region1 disc that contains the full length UK cut of the film and the reduced US version (reduced by the studio - not the censors) so maybe that's an option for me.
Is it really scarey, Jon?
I watched 'Hoffman' at the weekend, purely to hear Matt sing the title track.
It was a very strange film, can't say I enjoyed it.
The best part of the movie was without doubt the song Matt sings, 'If There Ever Is A Next Time'.
Can somebody please tell me which album of Matt's this appears on?
PS I was suprised to see Matt billed as Matt Monroe on the title sequence!
