Meeting the Famous

Post by jon » Tue Sep 11, 2007 8:23 am

Met and shook hands yesterday with both Tom Baker and Sir Derek Jacobi at a Doctor Who signing event on The Strand in London. Both were very nice and remarkably unstuffy, especially Sir Derek. I wonder what famous people other forum members have met and chatted to.

I met Judith Durham and The Seekers backstage in Sheffield 1995, they were all extremely nice and very down to earth. :)

I've met Jack Jones several times. A group of us were invited to his house in Palm Desert and he took us all out for a meal.
A never to be forgotten experience :D :D :D

:) I've met country music singers Crystal Gayle, Bill Anderson, Mary Lou Turner, and Barbara Mandrell. I've also met one of my Senators.

None of them invited me to their house. :( They didn't even take me out to dinner.

Fabulous stories, these.
I acted alongside and shared a dressing room with Robson Green and Ralf Ineson when I took part in the York Mystery Plays back in the mid-90's.
I wouldn't think for a minute they remember me (though we spent months together), but it was a fantatsic experience for me.

The best of all though...I met a lot of you guys last year! Now that takes some beating! :)

Wow - what amazing stories - that jack jones one from Marian still takes the bicuit, but I think Mariana also has some Johnny Mathis stories to share!

Paul - Crystal gale is one of my mums faves - I think she sang a great song in reply to D.I.V.O.R.C.E, that went along the lines of 'I don't want a PHd, I don.t want an M.A. - I just to be an M.R.S.' -

We do get a lot of stars in at Peter Jones, (2 Royal Warrants, a Chelsea Postocode and 7 floors of shopping heaven, as Hyacinth Bucket might say 8) ). I've dealt with Felicity Kendal, Anne Robinson, Dame Judy Dench, Nerys Hughes, Julia McKenzie, Prunella Scales, Orlando Bloom, Michelle Gale, Cliff Richard and George Michael... none of them asked me to their house though!

Here I go again, I hear those trumpets blow again.......

Yes, I have met Johnny Mathis many times, had my photo taken with him on many occasions, had hugs and kisses from him, plus on some occasions a chat, over here, plus in USA, and Canada.

I have also met Neil Sedaka and had my photo taken with him several times.

Also had tea with Stephanie Lawrence, in her dressing room, during her run as Evita.

Plus I chatted to many stars when I have been to Celebrity Golf matches---Howard Keel, Vic Damone, Frankie Vaughan, Bernie Winters, Johnny Briggs, William Roach---just too many to remember.

Not to mention meeting Matt Jr last year !!

Driving a taxi around london for 20 years, I have had plenty of celebs. in the back (so to speak) The one I remember most was when I was stopped in Russell square around 10.30 one evening, a couple approached me and asked if I could help find their car. They had been to a function and forgot where they had parked it. The couple were Ken Rosewall and his wife. For our younger members he was probably the greatest tennis player never to win Wimbledon. We eventually found the car. Ken was appearing in the senior tournament at Wimbledon at the time. For sports enthusiasts, I have Bobby Robson, Gary Lineker, Terry Venables, quite a few of the Arsenal team, The great Fred Trueman from the cricket world, lots of snooker player, also actors and actresses, politicians, There are too many to mention. All have been very polite, and best of all most tipped well.

I had a feeling that Harry and Lena would come up with something different for us. It just sounds fascinating being a taxi-driver.

You made me laugh Harry, nice stories :)

Next time you get Terry Venables in the cab, please can you ask him why the heck he brought Nick Barmby to Leeds? :)
