The Beatles

Post by jon » Wed Sep 19, 2007 8:23 am

Can't remember if we've had a separate thread on The Fab Four before or not. I've recently got into the album "A Hard Day's Night" after seeing the film on TV. I really like it. I also like "The White Album" (actually called just "The Beatles"), but I think "Revolver" is overrated. I wonder what other favourites songs/albums of the Beatles everyone else likes.

I kind of like some of the Beatles tunes, but never bought any records.
I have a story about a friend who went to see the Beatles when they first started touring, as a support group to more well known stars.
I can't recall who my friend went to see, but she was queuing for an autograph a the stage door when The Beatles came out and one of them said "Don't you want our autographs then love?" Unfortunately, my friend replied "I certainly don't, you're rubbish"!! :? :? :? :?
Marian
P.S. I also have another friend who turned down a date with Tom Jones.

I always loved their album "Love Songs"--but it was never relkeased as a cd as far as I knew.

I took my sister to see the Beatles at Hammermith Odeon [as it was then], when she was about 10---she is 53 now!!

There was so much screaming, the Beatles just could not be heard. !!

Hi All

I've just noticed these brilliant stories! :)
How wonderful Marian for you to of seen them live, regardless of the fact that you couldn't hear them! :)

Did anyone watch the documentary on the movie 'Help!' last week?
It was very good, I must admit I am a huge Beatles fan.

John, I like 'Revolver', sorry!

Don't apologise, Gray; it's not that important. "Revolver" is OK but not their best. I did see "Help" when it was on; hadn't really watched it properly before, to be honest, but enjoyed it. Quite surrealistic 60s kind of thing, as you'd expect. Eleanor Bron has aged well and I believe McCartney named "Eleanor Rigby" with her in mind, or so the story goes.

Harry here, Lena and i both like the Beatles and we have a few of their records , but my favourites are "All this and World War II" all the Beatles the songs are by guest artists. Also "Seargent Peppers lonely heart club Band" by the Bee Gees and guest artists. Great art work on the sleeves also posters in the WWII album. Some of the Beatles songs are now GREAT standards.

Ah, the lovable 'Mop Tops'. Marian, that is a great story about your friend; and Mariana, I love the fact I now know someone who went to a Beatles concert!

As for me, I loved their early and mid period, but never quite sure about the pyschedlic stuff!

As a child, I remember us having 'Hard Days Night', 'Rubber Soul', and 'Beatles Oldies but Goldies'. They were all fantastic, I think my faces were 'Can't by me love', 'Hard days night', 'Nowhere Man' and 'Back in The USSR', mainly cos it had a burst of Rolls-Royce Dart turbo-prop engines at the start (sorry its the airliner enthusiast in me!). I also thought the lyrics of this track were a great retort to Brian Wilsons 'Californian Girls', as I am sure it was meant to!

Finally, 'Twist and shout' is a great dance record, when I first heard it as a child, I thought it had such a good soul groove to it that that it had to be sung by a black vocal group - I was amazed it was sung by a white English band!
Michael

Here I go again, I hear those trumpets blow again.......

:)

Yes, Mike, you are right, John Lennon's vocals on Twist & Shout are incredible.
It's funny you mentioned your favourite phase of Beatles music - my favourite period would be the middle years to the latter :)
But I do like all their stuff.

I'm listening to Brian Matthew's Sound of the Sixties from last week. He's doing a little section about The Beatles and specifically She Loves You. Did you know that it was the biggest selling song in Britain until Mule of Kintyre in 1978? This is pretty amazing that nothing sold more than She Loves You during those years. George Martin was interviewed where he was so surprised that they came up with that sixth ending chord. The Beatles thought it was inventive, but George Martin said it's classic Glenn Miller. Also, that "yeah yeah yeah" has become an icon in music, so the song is definitely a groundbreaking track.
