I think if the Radio 2 controller had her way Sunday evenings would be like every other during the week, but because of the BBC Charter they have to continue to provide a public service for everyone, ie catering for the 'golden oldies' on sunday nights!!

I'm listening to Russell Davies right now and just heard the relaxing rendering of You're Sensational by Matt Monro. I'm enjoying his programme very much.

Thomas and everyone - I think the controller realises that half of the nation listens to Radio 2 from 6:30 to midnight. So she'd better not make any changes. I always listen for the full 5.5 hours every time I'm in the UK.

Now if she would just move Johnny Walker's Sunday afternoon programme of dreary Americana and chart hits to a weekday evening slot and put Ed Stewart and Desmond Carrington in that time slot where they belong.

I do miss listening to Ed Stewart on Sunday's.................wish they would bring him back

I'm in total agreement with you Robert & Jeff, the Johnny Walker show is a round peg in a square hole.

The whole problem is, this institution... BBC 2 in particular is controlled by those who enjoy the power that their position gives them, probably know nothing about music, and haven't got the ability to read or listen to what the majority of BBC 2 listeners think or what they want to hear.

Well they must be doing something their listeners want L&H, because radio2 is the most listened to station in the UK!

But I agree its not like the days of stewpot, john dunn, jameson, JY et al. (which was the time i loved). I agree with everyone else tho, Johnnie Walker's Sunday show is mildly depressing

Yes, BBC 2 is the most listened to station Thomas ...but not too much for us during the week, and not too much on a Sunday either, and although the referral here was mainly about Sunday listening i.e. Johnnie Walker and Ed Stewart. one good reason for that is that the vast majority of the more mature age group, many who have no other means of entertainment or ar unable to get out for instance (according to the amount of protests the BBC received when Desmond Carrington was relegated to his shorter Tuesday evening slot) prefer the golden oldies music. We still choose our programmes carefully.
Anyway don't forget everyone to listen in today, we may be pleasantly surprised.

Peter and I were out most of today, and I was disappointed not to get home in time to listen to the Brian Matthew section of the programme, which was from 4.30 - 6.30 p.m.
We actually got home around 5.45, so I was sure I must have missed Matt, but luckily I hadn't, the interview came on at around 6.10p.m.
No new information from Matt, but it was nice to hear his voice.
They spoke about "Portrait of My Love,"and played "My Kind of Girl."

Also Harvey's have now taken over sponsorship of "Coronation Street", so it was nice to hear him in the ad breaks there too.

Russell mentioned Fred Astaire and Eleanor Powell from the Broadway Melody of 1940 tonight

but he did make one LARGE mistake, and said it twice

when he mentioned the duet "Don't Monkey With Broadway" from the same film. He said the duet was sung by Fred Astaire and George Marsh, when in fact it was actually Fred Astaire and George Murphy, a famous song and dance man in his own right. I have emailed the show to tell them

We heard Russell's programme Robert and as soon as we heard Eleanor Powell mentioned we wondered if you were listening.
Must confess we didn't notice the mistake, so we'll go on to the "Listen Again" .

I'm sure David Jacob's made a mistake too tonight. He was talking about Royal Wedding starring Fred Astaire, and I'm sure he said co-starring Jane Russell...............instead of Jane Powell

what did they put in their drinking water during recording the programmes for today

I think he David did say Jane Powell Robert, I was particularly listening when i heard him mention Fred Astaire, wondering if we were going to get a repeat of Russells song, unless of course i've had something in my water today. Our son made us the last cup of tea this evening.
