Matt Monro Live in Australia

Post by Paul » Fri Dec 24, 2010 3:46 am

Hi Everyone! Hope you are all doing well!

My Live in Australia arrived today and I've just finished listening to it. A totally amazing recording!!! First, I found it a bit odd listening to Matt in a live recording. I don't think I have anything live from him in my collection so it was a real treat to hear this gem. The recording itself is superb. Very clear and full sounding with all the dynamics present. I also thoroughly enjoyed his banter....who knew??? I found myself laughing out loud at times. OK, then there's THE VOICE. Oh, my, goodness. To hear the true resonance of his live singing voice! I have always love his phrasing in his studio recordings but I found it a bit more relaxed while singing live. I also loved the way he changed the phrasing and melody at times with certain songs. This is already yet another treasured Matt Monro recording in my collection. I had to listen to the CD on my PC which has a good sound system with a powerful subwoofer, but we've just had a home theatre installed in our new home so I can't wait to hear on there on the weekend. I'm sure I'll feel like I'm in the audience! LOL My Best Wishes to everyone for Christmas and All The Best for the New Year!

Really looking forward to the Words and Music in February.

Paul,
Toronto.

Glad you liked it Paul. I so wanted to bring this to the market especially for those that had never seen dad perform live. I think there is nothing better than a live show, hearing the banter and getting a taste of the essence of the man behind the voice. It is also so much more intimate than the sterility of a studio album and even though you might know some of the songs, the arrangements might be different, there's a different take on things.

That is also why writing the book was important so that people know who the man behind the voice was - hope you caught the documentary on television tonight.
Here's to a great Christmas and may your new years always be filled with music.
Michele

I don't think the programme was shown as far away as Canada  :)

You're quite right. Matt has always seemed somewhat of an enigma to me as I've never had any live recordings...however, my mom tells me that we did see him live in England (we came to Toronto in 1966) when I was a kid...so I don't remember that. That's why this recording is such an eye-opener for me. There's absolutely nothing like live recordings! Another observation I didn't previously mention was that Matt sang quite a few Manilow tunes. A funny story (to me anyhow), back in the early '70's when we were in Burnley (Lancs) visiting, I liked this tune by David Cassidy called I Write The Songs. Then a while after I came back home this guy called Barry Manilow recorded it and I thought "Who the heck is the guy ruining this song?" and I didn't like it at all. After I got to know Barry, he became one of my faves. I love his voice and his arrangements....so I guess you dad realized what a talent he was too.

Anyhow, I hope your Christmas went well and All The Best for 2011....and bring on the Matt Monro stuff!

You're quite right. Does none of this stuff get posted anywhere? When Bassey's show on the Electric Proms on 2009 10 23 appeared on the BBC, the very next day, it was posted and I got the whole thing burned on DVD. By any chance, does anyone have this so I get a copy?

I realise the programme was not shown outside England BUT it is available to watch on the BBC IPlayer website, which I think is accessible worldwide. If you are interested the link is:

Eh Michele, thanks for the response. Unfortunately, when I visited the link, it said "Not available in your area." The Bassey stuff was loaded on some website for download (I can't remember what it was though). If anyone could post a link to somewhere where I could download it, I would be eternally grateful!
