What Movies Have Been Playing On Your DVD/Video Lately?
Re: What Movies Have Been Playing On Your DVD/Video Lately?
I have just watched a programme on Tv, featuring Matt Lucas, who was in the O2 production---it certainly looked spectacular in the O2 arena--I will try and get hold of the 25th Anniversary one--I love the show and the music--I saw it on Broadway, New York , in the mid 90's.
My favourite programme about the show [so far], is called "The making of Les Miserables".
Did anyone else have to study this book in their French lessons at school ??--I wish I had taken more interest in it then !!

I love the show too Marian, we saw it at The Palace in the eighties. when Dave Willetts was Jean Valjean for a while.
It's certainly worth getting the new DVD, an evening to remember!
I got mine from Amazon.

I have ordered mine from Amazon too---I think Dave Willetts version of "Bring him home" is one of the best ever.

I bought the book too from Amazon, it's bigger and heavier than 'The Singer's Singer'!!
I've managed one chapter so far. Wish me luck!

I just hope you are not struggling with the original French version.
I am just starting on a book that my sister bought me for Christmas about Karen Carpenter, called "Little Girl Blue"--this is a new book about Karen.
I have also ordered the autobiography of Vince Hill, but that has not yet arrived.

Have just watched "The Vera Lynn Story" on BBC4. Although it was shown last year I still enjoyed watching it again. A fascinating story of a great lady.

Did anyone else see the Programme about The Beverley Sisters--I think it was yesterday--or maybe Friday.
I really enjoyed it.
Also a great show about The Palladium--both these shows featured many stars who are no longer with us---very nostalgic.

I saw the last 15 minutes of the programme about The Beverley Sisters and wished I had seen it all. I also saw the London Palladium programme and thought it was excellent. I was surprised to hear how aggressive Mario Lanza could be though! It was nice to see a Jack Jones poster from the 70s on the wall behind the person Mario punched on the nose!

"My Tears Will Fall Now That You're Gone,
I Can't Help But Cry, But I Must Go On"
I Can't Help But Cry, But I Must Go On"

Re: What Movies Have Been Playing On Your DVD/Video Lately?
No Robert, Mario Lanza. I'll re-phrase my post.

Re: What Movies Have Been Playing On Your DVD/Video Lately?
Oh I see Marian
.............I spelt "someone" incorrectly too

"My Tears Will Fall Now That You're Gone,
I Can't Help But Cry, But I Must Go On"
I Can't Help But Cry, But I Must Go On"

We watched the repeated Vera Lynn and Beverley Sisters programmes again and the Palladium show. We recently purchased the DVD from the London Palladium shows and enjoyed it.
Although we don't contribute postings on any of Mario Lanza many web-sites, we are familiar with his close contacts because of the connection with Al Martino.
Al always appreciated the fact that Mario Lanza who was very popular in the early Fifties, turned down the offer to record "Here In My Heart " and it gave Al's recording the chance to become a hit, which it did of course.
Ironocally Al passed away just a few days after performing as MC and singing in a tribute concert for Lanza and his son Damon.
Al's daughter Alison is a television producer and a few years ago made a documentary of a series Mysteries and Scandals on the life and controversial death of Mario Lanza at the age of 38, which has been never ending.
Mario's temperament showed that night at the Palladium when he hit agent Peter Pritchard. His nerves certainly showed that night too, even though he sang magnificently. That's fame for you. !!!

Re: What Movies Have Been Playing On Your DVD/Video Lately?
I managed to see all three documentaries also!
The Palladium documentary infuruiated me, as, once again, Tommy Steele remained un-mentioned, except for a brief snippet. Tommy has the most appearances there over any other artist, and even has a plaque in the Cinderella bar at The Lady, but he wasn't included in this programme. Neither was Max Bygraves, another Palladium veteran.
I wasn't happy with this programme at all. Bad research from the Bill Kenwright company who produced it. Not to mention no mention of Gracie Fields, who headlined hundreds of shows there and was the first person to star on 'Sunday Night at the London Palladium'.
There was a 2 part radio documentary on Radio 2 over Xmas about the Palladium, and this was a lot better!
The DVD of the Palladium which Lena and Harry spoke about. Whilst enjoyable, I don't think the editions they included there summed up 'Sunday Night at the London Palladium' for me. I know they are few and far between the surviving episodes, but there must be some better available ones. The photo gallery on disc 3 was a disgrace aswell.
The Vera Lynn Story, ahhh, that was nice to watch again. I'm a big VL fan so it was nice to see a documentary about her -in the same vein as the 'Amazing Gracie' documentary and of course, the Matt documentary.
There was a brilliant Danny La Rue programme on over Christmas, which I missed recording, but I caught the Bev's programme, which was very nice to watch -and very educational for me about them, who I only know from a Max Bygraves singalong DVD! I have their autograph somewhere. No idea where it came from though, as I certainly wouldn't have bought it!

Re: What Movies Have Been Playing On Your DVD/Video Lately?
Hi Seb,
According to my sources the Sunday Night at the London Palladium DVD contains all but one of the surviving (broadcast quality) shows. There is one more which features the Seekers and Roy Orbison with Jimmy Tarbuck as host. This was an experimental colour show and the colour is not consistent which may be why it's not included. Two other shows exist but from an early domestic video recording and are not broadcast quality. There are also several Bob Monkouse Era shows that exist in his archives but once again not broadcast quality (and if the clips on his documentary the other night are anything to go by, only just watchable!
So whilst they may not be representative, it's about all there is left!
Richard
