Hi Robert

Sunset Boulevard is a cracking movie Robert, I'm a big fan of William Holden, especially in The Wild Bunch.
The director Billy Wilder made some cracking films, didn't he?
Some Like It Hot is my all time favourite Wilder picture, but I like The Private Life Of Sherlock Holmes too.

I watched 'Whatever Happened...' about a month ago, it really scared me when I was a nipper too.
However, I didn't think time has been kind to it and found it rather sluggish.

I did not see the movie of "Sunset Boulevard"--but I did see the musical twiceI have to say that I did not find it was one of ALW's best musicals, and watching it on stage was quite confusing , as there were 2 sets, one on top of the other, with different things going on, on each set--althoough it became clearer the second time around--i saw Patti Lupone both times.

Although I know that both Elaine Paige and Petula Clark also took the star role.

Indeed Gray, I would rate 'Some like it hot' as one of my fave films ever. Such sophisticated comedy from the US, who were doing lots of excellent films at the time (the Doris Day 'sex' comedies were all fantastic too). While the UK we were churning out the 'Carry on...' capers at an alarming rate (that said, Carry on Spying is a brilliant Bond spoof)

I think Billy Wilder also produced 'The Apartment', which was another fantastic film, but a lot poignant.

Robert - thing I remember William Holden for is from the 'Towering Inferno' - remember being to young to see it when it 1st came out as it was 'AA'. I got taken to see 'Peter Pan' instead. Still a good movie, although a bit tedious in the middle with Jennifer Jones and some annoying kids climbing down a derelict staircase for about 10 minutes! But what a film for star-spotting! Fred Astaire in there too, and of course Paul Newman, Steve McQueen, Faye Dunnaway, Richard Chamberlain and Robert Wagner.

Oh - and back to comedy - Barbra Streissand and Ryan O'Neal are amazing in 'Whats up Doc' - just a brilliant screwball comedy, with the wonderfully whiney voiced Madeline Kahns playing Eunice. Fantastic chase scenes through San Francisco, a fantastic film

I will never forget the evening I saw Petula Clark in Sunset Boulevard as it was a very special evening out in London for me. Everyone around me was so well dressed and I was in a sports jacket. I certainly felt like a church mouse that night!

"Towerig Inferno" was a great film--one of George's favourites-I guess we saw it about 20 times !!

Madeline Kahn sadly died a good few years back--in USA she had her own show--a sit-com--bit like "I love Lucy"--she was always doing whacky things, In one of her shows Johnny Mathis was a guest star-playing himself--the first and only time he has done this to my knowledge---it was very funny--as she thought he was an imposter, and when he was singing on stage, she tried to drag him off stage--and he was trying as hard as can be to stay on stage, all the time trying to sing "Chances "Are"--I laugh every time I see it...

Hi All

Yes, I like The Towering Inferno also, it may be a bit dated now, but it is still a decent film.
Peter Pan is a cracking Disney film, Mike, shame you missed Towering Inferno in a theatre, but Peter Pan is a very good compromise!
My favourite William Holden films are Network & The Wild Bunch, he was a very good actor.

Watched 'Perfect Stranger' last night with Halle Berry, (well she was in the movie, I didn't actually go to see a film with Halle Berry accompianing me! :))
I didn't think much to it, I'm afraid.
Too sordid for me. :(

Hi Gray - I did manage to see 'Towering Inferno' at the local flea-pit in Guisborough, in about 1980. Those were the days when they used to re-release films, rather than the videos. Not quite the same as seeing at the posh Odeon in Middlesbrough  (yes Middlesbrough did have something posh in those days - although nowadays its 'Jumpin Jacks' night club  )

Aww - sad to hear about Madeline Kahns - she also played a wonderfully kookie school secretary in 80s cult teen movie 'Ferris Buellers day off'

And Terence - you would have been much smarter than the average Brit if you turned up anywhere in a Sports Jacket these days

Apparently Halle Berry has been nominated for a 'Rossie' - the opposite to an Oscar for 'Perfect Stranger' Gray, so you're not alone in you views

:)
It doesn't suprise me, Mike.
I said to my better half when we were viewing the film 'is this the only dross available to an Oscar winning actress?'. :(

I went to the theatre last night to watch a recording of the Radio 4 show 'I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue' in Manchester.
Absolutely hystercial.
I think the new series starts on radio 4 on 11th Nov, I shall remind you all when it starts because if you've never heard it before you're in for a treat. :)

I also watched (from Fred and Gingers 8 box set) "The Gay Divorcee" last night - I love watching classic 30's musicals 8)
"My Tears Will Fall Now That You're Gone,
I Can't Help But Cry, But I Must Go On" :(

Watched "Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte" last night with Bette Davis and Olivia de Havilland. Great film, I had never seen it before, Al Martino sings the song at the end.

" Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte " is one of Al's best recordings John, and Two of the finest actresses. In that movie of the same name.. .. Bette Davis... Who can forget her movies. Remember this line from "Now Voyager" to Paul Henreid... DON'T ASK FOR THE MOON,.. WE HAVE THE STARS.. Ahhhhh ...and remembering her on Terry Wogan's tv show after recovering from a stroke, and making her entrance to the music striking up with that great song from that movie.... "IT CAN'T BE WRONG" and the beautiful Olivia De Havilland ( sister of Joan Fontaine) in Gone With The Wind.
They definitely don't make them like that any more :) :) :)
