Japan's Earthquake and Tsunami 11.3.11

Post by Marian » Sat Mar 12, 2011 9:22 pm

A horrific disaster! What terrible pictures on our TVs and news. It is almost unbelievable that this is happening to people's lives.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to everyone affected by this horrific disaster.
Friends of ours, a young family with a little girl, live in Kobe Japan, another part that was devastated by an earthquake in 1995, luckily they were fine, but I spent the day worrying about them. Dad, Masaya, runs the Jack Jones website. Thank God they were okay. A terrible day.

I was also watching the news this evening---I think people are just now starting to realise the full extent of this tragedy--and I also think it may never be known how many lives were lost. The pictures we are seeing are so graphic, it is hard to believe it is real life--and not special effects like is seen on a film.

The weather over the whole world world has gone so crazy, it is frightening--where will the next disaster strike !!!

I had the following lines published in February 2005.
Sadly they are still relevant today:

TIDAL TARTARUS

Satan went on a spending spree
of evil and the currency he used
was the high-roller purchasing power
of the tsunami-inflated sea.

Amid the havoc of his brutal bullying,
hell's shopping list of razed homes;
incipient disease; broken hearts;
traumas; the bereft crying;
and the mass-graves disposal of bodies,
was a vestige of countervailing
heavenly virtue to be found?

Yes, in the rush-to-the-sales eagerness
of Earth's fellow citizens to rally round ...

Very apt words Keith. The tsunami then was very real for us too, as our son in law at the time came from Sri Lanka and lost several relatives. Being a diver, he went back then to help recover bodies. Terrible work.

We certainly are lucky in this country when we hear of the destruction that an earthquake of this measure causes, and so many lost lives and homes destroyed.
Our thoughts go out to those who are suffering in this dreadful tragedy.

We certainly share all the sentiments that have been expressed so far. The most frightening thing now is the Nuclear situation and the possibility of another earthquake.

Added to that they said on the news today that there is now going to be food shortages and people are having to queue for ages and that electricity will have to be rationed.

Puts everything in perspective doesn't it.

Indeed, never under-estimate the power of water. It's a real tragedy and is bound to affect very many people for years, possibly the rest of their lives.
We were preparing at work on Thursday to send some equipment to Japan in connection with a tsunami warning system; sadly it was too late for this time (as we found out when we woke on Friday morning) but hopefully it will help in the future.
My heart goes out to all those affected by this disaster; let's hope that there is no serious nuclear incident arising from the current problems

Does anyone know of an organization or website that can help me locate some friends in Japan? I've tried several websites in the States to no avail. One women is the wife of someone who was my family's foreign exchange student back in 1960. My friend has been deceased awhile. The other family is the sister and brother-in-law of my deceased friend. I have learned that although the Japanese have directory assistance, alot of families don't list their numbers. Any help is greatly appreciated!

I do know someone who lives in Japan Don who might be able to help you.
Thankfully he and his family are okay, and living in an area away from the immediate devastation. I will send his email address on a private message and also tell him you might contact him.
Marian.
