The Late Late Show - Superb

Post by ROBERT M. » Thu Nov 22, 2007 1:35 am

I listened to Matts beautiful album from 1968 recorded on the Capitol label in America, last night. The Late Late Show is without doubt one of Matts most amazing albums ever recorded. Full of sumptuous ballads, every song on the album is glorious, absolutely no duds at all.

Tracklisting, with my ratings for the songs-

If She Should Come To You........................9/10
When I Fall In Love.....................................7/10
Maria..........................................................10/10
Hello Young Lovers......................................9/10
September Song..........................................10/10
Time After Time...........................................10/10
This Is All I Ask.............................................9/10
I've Grown Accustomed To Her Face...........8/10
Days of Wine and Roses...............................9/10
The Shadow of Your Smile...........................9/10
Autumn Leaves............................................10/10
The Party's Over...........................................9/10

What an album, full of masterpieces I gave it 109 marks out of a possible 120.

Yes, it is a great album Robert. I think "The Days Of Wine And Roses" is wonderful, but I think my favourite is "Autumn Leaves", just beautiful. If I remember correctly this is a favourite of Mickie's as well. 8) :D

Funnily enough, I was listening to this great album yesterday too. Although I have them on CD, I also bought both on vinyl, "The Late Late Show" and "These Years".

Hi there,

This album, although on Capitol, was not recorded in America. The vast majority was recorded at Olympic Studios in Barnes - the rest - well you'll have to wait for my session listing!

Just though you'd be interested!

Well that's amazing Richard, I also thought this album was recorded in the US.

Robert, glad you gave Hello Young Lovers 9 out of 10, that is my favourite song from the album.

Thanks for the information Richard, the albums orchestration is so brilliant too, truly outstanding.........so who led the band then, if it was recorded over here ?? I always had Sid Feller in my mind for Matts American ballads. (Was it Johnny Spence). With it being a Capitol release, one automatically thinks of it being recorded in the US

It does list EMI records as well as Capitol on the album and states "Made and printed in Great Britain."
The various tracks have different arrangers and conductors listed..
If She should Come to You ... George Martin.

When I Fall in Love.... David Whittaker, also..
Hello Young Lovers, and The Party's Over.

Maria... Kenny Clayton, also..
Days of Wine and Roses.

September Song.... John Cameron, also..
I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face, and Autumn Leaves.

Time After Time... Johnnie Spence.. also..
This is All I Ask, and The Shadow of Your Smile.

All great numbers "Days of Wine And Roses" "Time After Time" and "Autumn leaves" are special favourites and not forgetting "When I Fall In Love" reminding us that this song with Matt duetting with Cliff Richard is the best we've heard.

"When I Fall in Love" has always been one of Peter's favourites, sung by Nat King Cole.
He doesn't usually like these songs when sung by other singers, but Matt's version on this song is right up there alongside Nat's. :D :D

You are quite correct Marian. You will notice that all of these arrangers are UK based.

What you have to remember is that from 66 - 71 Matt was signed to Capitol Records but this did not mean that all the albums during this time were recorded in America. Several albums and a boat load of singles were were but the rest were recorded in the UK.

I have recently discovered two more tracks that appeared on an album in 1970 that were recorded in the USA, but Matt hadn't recorded there for 2 years before then.

I'm teasing you a bit here though, as I don't want to give everything away at this point!

Could this be "We're Gonna Change the World" Richard?
A Capitol labelled, UK issued, EMI pressed LP from 1970. All but one track produced by George Martin.

Just wondered if you would know if there is any likelihood of "Only Once" being released on CD in the future?
A new forum member, Sheila, asked me about this track, and looking through the Definative Track List, this has only ever been on three LPS, "The Long and Winding Road," "Retrato de Matt Monro" and "Un Toque De Distincion."
The Definative Track List is sooo impressive by the way.

L&H, I'm sure Matt and Cliff dueted on "Let There Be Love"............not "When I Fall In Love"
