If Matt was here...

Post by Michele Monro » Sun Dec 09, 2007 12:35 am

With so many of the current solo artists and bands recording cover versions and trying to make their interpretation their own, what somg would you most like to have heard Matt sing if he was here now and why?

I bet Matt would have sounded quite good singing "Valerie" in a similar style to the Amy Winehouse version :) :)
"My Tears Will Fall Now That You're Gone,
I Can't Help But Cry, But I Must Go On" :(

Robert - I'd rather hear Matt sing the original (and far superior) Zutons' version of Valerie. I think Mark Ronson is a brilliant producer, but I don't like what he did to Valerie. (Most people have strong opinions on this subject. The Zutons Valerie was one of my three favourite songs of 2006 and I'm quite bothered by this Winehouse recording. Hopefully the original Zutons will stand the test of time and the Ronson/Winehouse version will be forgotton.)

Back to Michele's question: Rule The World.

This is a love song that will become a standard one day, and Matt Monro would have sung it perfectly and beautifully.

I'm sure I'll think of other current songs soon, but Rule The World comes to mind first.

At this time of year I often wish Matt had recorded more Christmas songs and perhaps a Christmas album. :D

Yes we agree Marian. We can imagine Matt singing "White Christmas," and Nat King Coles "Christmas song" and particularly "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas"

If I remember correctly Lena and Harry, Matt sung a little bit of "The Christmas Song" on Larry Grayson's Generation Game in the late seventies. There were several artists on, all dressed in costumes, and the contestants had to guess who they were when they sang.

Watch out on UK Gold over Christmas Lena and Harry, there is always a chance it could be repeated again, I think I last saw it a couple of years ago.

I remember seeing it a couple of years back too. I think the contestants also had to guess who was hidden behind certain doors, and one of them was Matt. Hope they show it again this Christmas.

Wow - what a tricky question!

I'd agree on the Christmas song - maybe one of the 60s Christmas Show numbers a la Andy Williams

The other track I love and have never heard Matt sing is 'The Summer Wind' - did he ever record this? Oh - you're all probably going to refer me to the discography now aren't you lol

Here I go again, I hear those trumpets blow again.......
