SIR HENRY COOPER.

Post by Lena & Harry Smith » Sun May 01, 2011 11:15 pm

We are so sad to hear that the great British boxing legend Sir Henry Cooper has died at the age of 76. Not only was he a great fighter who was known and remembered for the punch that put Mahammed Ali down, but a true gentleman too.

Yes L&H, a true British sporting legend was "our enry" :) .............he was only knighted in 2000 which seemed a bit late to me  .........the only boxer to ever knock Mohammed Ali down during a fight (Cassius Clay as he was known in 1963 when that fight took place) ..................RIP Sir Henry Cooper :( :( ........ a British legend :) :)

His wife passed away in 2008, and his twin brother George passed away last year :(

Henry's close friends for many years have said that he died of a broken heart.
He was very close to his twin brother, but totally devoted to his wife Albina who died in 2,008.
We remember when they married and he spoke of how they met and fell in love.
Few men can openly talk in that way..
Henry was guest on "This is Your Life" for my Sisters friend whose family came over from Australia for their Mother's 80th Birthday. :) :)
I taped it and lost it

As you may have read, Sir henry Cooper was buried just recently---but I have just found out that he lived in Hildenborough, which is between Sevenoaks and Tonbridge, where I do my weekly shop.
Lots of big names there, as you can imagine, but what I also did not know , the church service was in the Church, just opposite my dentist, and practically next door to where I went for Lace-making classes--in Tonbridge.

There was a lovely 45 minute tribute to Sir Henry Cooper last night on BBC 2 and one of the nicest tributes that we've seen for anyone in a long time.
Henry was talking of his upbring in Bellingham with his parents and his brothers, and particularly the special bond that he had all through his life with Twin brother George.
There were tributes from his Two sons Marc and John, and from special sporting celebrities such as Bobby Charlton and comedian Jimmy Tarbuck who spoke so emotionally about Henry who was a great friend of his, and Jimmy said that a big part of Henry's heart was broken when his wfe Albina passed away.
Henry's fight with Mahommad Ali (then Cassius Clay) was shown, and this time we saw that punch in a clip much nearer and clearer than we had seen here so many times before. That killer punch almost took his head off his shoulders, he was gone, and Ali's trainer admitted last night that if it wasn't for the bell, and the fact that he had Three minutes to recover instead of the One due to a glove that had a small gap, and was made deliberately bigger and needed more repair time, there is no way that he would have won that fight. !!!

I have not watched it yet, but I cannot imagine it being any less than a great tribute to Henry Cooper.
