Shirley Bassey mugged

Nov 4 2007 by Nathan Bevan, Wales On Sunday

DAME Shirley Bassey says she doesn’t feel safe on the streets of London anymore after being mugged on a recent shopping trip.

The 70-year-old Tiger Bay diva revealed how she was attacked when she attended the recent Q magazine music awards in the capital.

She said: “I got mugged in Knightsbridge last week. I was with my daughter and we got out of my car and decided to walk when someone bumped into me.

“I looked the other way and before I knew it they’d got my purse. It’s been frightful getting my new credit cards – it’s shocking.

“Whoever it was must have followed me. It’s awful to think I can walk safely in my home town of Monte Carlo but not in London.”

But the Big Spender star was all smiles when she came to present the Best Act In The World Today award to the Arctic Monkeys at the celebrated pop bash at London’s Grosvenor House hotel, the band having done a cheeky rendition of her Diamonds Are Forever at the Glastonbury Festival this summer.

“It was so sweet of them to do it,” said Dame Shirley, who later wowed the crowd at the same festival with a barnstorming set decked out in diamante wellies and a tight, hot pink Julien Macdonald dress.

“But, before I went on the promoter said that after I’d done my own version of Diamonds I should say something like, ‘Arctic Monkeys, that’s how you do it!’

“I thought, ‘I can’t say that’, but, I’m afraid, I did’.

“I didn’t realise at the time they were standing watching in the wings in their wellies,” she laughed. “I was mortified.”

Shirley Bassey with Kanye West --- that will be a record I will definitely not buy. I can't stand anything Kanye West does. He basically rips off old music and has never done anything original. And his attitude is deplorable.

Now, the Arctic Monkeys ... there's an original and they are inspiring new acts. :)

It was 11 months late, but Dame Shirley Bassey finally celebrated her 70th birthday last night.

The Welsh diva invited a host of her famous friends, including Joan Collins, 74; Cilla Black, 64; and 'King of the Jungle' Christopher Biggins, to the lavish bash at Cliveden in Berkshire.

Despite their advancing years, Dame Shirley and her pals showed they could party just as hard as their younger contemporaries.

Dame Shirley and her Golden Girl pals spent the night quaffing champagne and showing off their moves on the dancefloor.

Dressed in a red fur bolero, Dame Shirley entered her party flanked by the self-styled Fantasy Boys - a topless male dance troupe dressed in white satin trousers

Despite celebrating her own birthday, Dame Shirley belted out 'Happy Birthday' to herself, before cutting her four-tiered red birthday cake.

Besides Dame Shirley's famous voice, upcoming singer/songwriter Tallulah Rendell and operatic boy band Blake provided the entertainment.

The diva was serenaded by Blake - who formed after meeting on social networking site Facebook earlier this year - before being kissed by all four members.

I have just been advised that the recordings have been remastered using CEDAR, the world's leading audio restoration system. So the sound should be good.
