Amanda and I watched Hitchcock's 'Lifeboat' last night, I think Robert has mentioned it before somewhere on the forum.
It was really good, it's been a while since I'd seen it, I had forgotten what a fine picture it is.

Pan's Labyrinth

Post by jon » Fri Jan 04, 2008 9:26 am

Hi Gray

I've thought of another movie recommendation for you - how about Pan's Labyrinth? Came out 2006. I saw it in the cinema and again on Film Four on TV over Xmas. Directed by the Spanish director Guillermo Del Toro, it is set in 1944 and follows the story of a young girl who meets a faun in the woods near her home and is set three challenges by it to gain access to the underworld. But the background story is just as good - her mother is pregnant by the local military commander but is actually also secretly in love with the Communist rebel leader he is trying to capture. It's quite a dark film and violent in places, but well worth seeing. It's also out on DVD.

Hi Jon

That is a very timely recommendation as I have taped Pan's Labyrinth also from Film 4!
I did see a small clip of the film at the Bradford Media Museum in projected in Digital last year when I attended a seminar on the future of cinema, it looked very impressive.

Once I have viewed it, I shall let you know my thoughts!

Many thanks for recommending it! :)

I took my munchkins to see 'Ratatouille' at the weekend, a fairly recent Disney/Pixar animation movie.
Whilst is length of just under two hours was a bit of the treck for my youngest, I loved every minute of it.

Went to see 'No Country For Old Men' last night, I thought it was very good.
A friend didn't like the last 20 minutes, it left him 'undernourished' and confused, but it all made sense to me!

Watched the Karen Carpenter story last night. I have it on video, then I was looking through the tv magazine and noticed it is on one day next week.

John

For a good scare, may I recommend DEAD SILENCE.

Thanks for that Terence, will have to look out for this one. I noticed that this film is from the creators of the "SAW" films, I watched "SAW 4" the other night, very gruesome and not for the faint hearted.

Watched the DVD "Every Night at Eight" last night, in which Frances Langford sings her most famous recording "I'm In the Mood For Love" a film co-starring George Raft and Alice Faye 8)

It's good there are ways and means of obtaining a lot of these classic movies from sellers on the internet :D :D otherwise I would hardly ever be able to watch Eleanor Powell or Frances Langford on film, as there is so very little available to buy. So far only ONE Ellie film is available to buy on the open market :(

Message for Paul in the States (or anyone else who would like to contribute)!

Did you see that George Clooney (your doppleganger! :)) spoke at a function and said the very thing that I have mentioned to you on several occassions?
He said, the greatest age of American cinema was 1964 - 1976, my words exactly!
He also said that there hasn't been an American masterpiece of film in years. Again, my words exactly!

I think George Clooney is a very intelligent fellow, he could go places. :)
