.................the authorities cannot send in the army because they are all in Afghanistan and Libya etc etc

We echo everything that has been said so far.
The punishments should fit the crime but will they? Perhaps the do-gooders will reflect on the fact that all their soft soaping over the years has let anarchy rule the day. It's time to wake up and smell the coffee!
Hope everyone affected by these terrible events will stay safe.

Yes, we agree with what you say Mauree and Harry. Through all these past years of the Softly Softly approach, and the laughable ASBO the country has become a laughing stock, with chaos everywhere, and Robert, we have also seen that up to now London is somewhat quieter tonight, probably because there is little left in the shops for the morons to loot and are busy at home enjoying and weighing up their goodies.
Re: Riots, looting & burning in London
So sorry to hear about what's been happening in London the past four days. It was horrifying to see the pictures on the news of buildings engulfed in flames and destroyed. Hope you all are safe and removed from the violence!

Remove their unemployment benefits if they are identified and caught!

I do not think we can be complacent after one relatively quiet night in London--I know many stores and businesses closed early and were boarded up--plus a massive police presence-hardly normal conditions. That cannot be continued indefinately.
And as we saw last night, the problems just spread elsewhere. Terrible scenes from Manchester and Birmingham last night--3 men killed--where is it going to end. I heard some teenage yob, winging on Tv this morning "everything is so expensive these days "---havn't they heard of the phrase "doing without" !! They seem to think they should have it all-computers, mobiles, x boxes, trainers handed to them on a plate--and if not, they take using any means they can.
Wait till they join the real world of mortgages, rent, council tax, electricity bills--that will give them something to winge about .

They all seem to be able to afford 'Blackberries' too, I can't!
Re: Riots, looting & burning in London
Horrific scenes which as we knew would eventually lead to the deaths of innocent people.
Why haven't they closed down the social network sites of f.book, twitter etc which informs the morons where the next 'hit' is going to be

Re: Riots, looting & burning in London
Apparently Facebook and Twitter are open to everyone, so the police can also read any messages, but messages sent by Blackberrys are encrypted, so the organisers of the looting etc. can send messages privately.

I was wondering the same as Sandra. That explains it.

One of the looters who appeared in court today was given i days jail, and immediately released because he had already been held for a day!!
He will have to appear again later in a crown court but what kind of message does this give to the other troublemakers. He'll probably be out again tonight, or enjoying his newly aquired freebies at home!
I also see shockingly among the rioters were a teaching assistant at a primary school, a chef, and an opera steward.

Re: Riots, looting & burning in London
My Chinese friend in London witnessed a mob of about 100 black youths looting a jewelers with a few policemen just standing around and looking on. This was when he went to the post office on Monday.

Re: Riots, looting & burning in London
David Cameron announced today that the police have his authority to use whatever equipment it takes to deal with the rioters, such as rubber bullets and water cannons, and then we see that one of the chiefs of police doesn't find this as being necessary.
Has he been asleep these past few days and nights or what
