POEMS - With Tongue In Cheek
Re: POEMS - With Tongue In Cheek
I think many of us can relate to that poem, in one way or another Keith-thanks for bringing it to us.

Thank you Keith. Quite sad really, but not a bit like my childhood!!

Thanks Gray; I also like to post the occasional
topical tease:
MARKET MANIA
The markets need to calm
their knee-jerk ills;
whenever storm-waves gather
they take off for the hills.
While they persist in being
numbers nervous,
they do society a grave disservice.

DEVIL'S ADVOCATE
Is it seemly that private opinion
can hold overall power dominion?
Its judgments can sometimes be Poor,
yet its verdicts can seriously injure.
Maybe it is time to start deprecating
the purveyors of the credit rating.

Re: POEMS - With Tongue In Cheek
In the maelstrom of current news misery,
a bit of spiritual uplift may be welcome
to lift the gloom. Fingers crossed that this
new Matt Monro-inspired poem will do the trick.
SOUND SINCERITY
Our Odysseus spurned the blandishment
of the Siren mid-Atlantic accent,
yet keeps 'old sweet song' Georgia on our mind;
the emissary of mid-summer Memphis,
and cadenced purloiner of stolen hearts
when called to leave San Francisco behind.
The London-loyal trav'lling troubadour
by thaumaturgy created the role
of Uncle Sam's singing ambassador.
So I, in uncircumscribed awe, ask: 'Matt,
how did you make an epic cinch of that?'

Re: POEMS - With Tongue In Cheek
Ladies, I am flattered by the forensic interest
you have taken in my poem - thank you.
Most of my stuff is written in iambic pentameter
(it was good enough for Shakespeare) therefore
I try to make every word pull its weight and match
the metre and meaning.
Certainly thaumaturgy, which means miracle working,
describes precisely Matt's uncanny ability to capture
the essence of the American songbook without compromising
his natural English accent; miraculously, it adds an extra
layer of interpretative meaning.
Matt Monro didn't simply reach the pinnacle of popular
song presentation; he was also a marvellous human being.
PS I can see him up there smiling to himself
and thinking: 'Blimey, I'm a thaumaturge now.'

Thanks Robert, at the risk of repeating myself,
the star of every readable poem is the subject matter;
the poet is a mere cypher.

PS
Your joke about an old lady's circle of male friends
is hilarious, L&H. It is almost poetic.
