VINYL VS COMPACT DISC

There are many of us here who remember and collected records.

Does anyone miss vinyl, if so why>

I do not for the sound as I think cd is far superior but I just like records, I loved reading the album sleeves as the print on cd's is ridiculously small - do they think we all have bionic eyesight

Yesterday I was playing some LP's and burning them to cd and I really enjoyed watching the records go round and round it was like old times!
I remember my granny used to love watching our radiogram when it changed to the next record and she would say "How Does It Do That".

If she saw today's gadgets, microwaves, colour tv, dishwashers, mobile phones etc she'd be even more amazed.

For me, there is no contest--cd's all the way.

They are easier to store, taking up less room, and so much more versatile. With an Lp, you would put it on, listen to the same 5 or 6 songs--if you were lucky-always in the same order---then get up turn it over--another 5 or 6 tracks.

With a cd there is no turning over--you can play the songs in any order you like, or just random--or just listen to the same track. Many cds contain up to 25 or more tracks--almost an hour--you could even play several at a time with a cd changer, using random or programm your tracks, and provide a whole evening of music with no changing.

Then the incessant cleaning if Lps, with a spray and a special cloth-then putting them into a bag, into the record case, and in my case into another polythene cover--making sure they were always stored upright---and making sure the needle was always kept clean---and how easy was it to move the arm, and dread looking at the record in case it was scratched---or the needle would get caught on something on the record, and play the same bit over and over till you got up and moved it.

Yes, true it was easy to read the cover--but cds now sometimes have little books inside, with extra information, and in many cases the lyrics to the songs.

Plus of course with a personal cd player, you could take your cds on a journey or holiday--not possiblke with a record player and a pile of Lps.

So, there is my case for the CD.

I did that yesterday but blew it off, the needle is now referred to as a stylus, get used to modern jargon Robert !!!!

I agree with everything Marion said but I stil have a soft spot for vinyl, I just like going through all my collection and remembering when I bought them.

I remember when Dusty In Memphis was released and my local record store (I knew the owners) had it in the window and I couldn't buy it as it was early closing day - I was not happy!!!!!

I do have some of my very early lps that I bought--some over 50 years old. !! But with most of them, i replaced with cds whenever I could--although some have never been available as cds.

None of the young people I work with buy CDs. They download, but some of them are collecting vinyl records. One has an entire wall of vinyl -- primarily classic rock and jazz. The local record store now has a long rack of new (and reissued) albums. It's nice to see and wonderful to browse. They are more expensive than the corresponding CD. I remember when the CDs were far more expensive than records and cassettes.

I still love the sound of vinyl. When I play my LP of This Is The Life, Matt Monro is in the room singing to me. I don't get that feeling with a CD. But Marian's argument does provide all the benefits of CDs.
