Hi Marian, the song "Wind Beneath My Wings" seemed to come out of the blue, when heavy metal and rock, rap and reggae had really taken over the music scene, this song became popularised and was sung by Bill Tarmey on "This Is You Life," dedicated to his wife, and although Bette Midler made a great recording, our favourite was Joe Longthorne's.
A Perfect one for Matt.
But what about this one, Matt should definitely have recorded this Jerome Kern number, "Smoke Gets In You Eyes "
Ahhh!!! those were the days when going to the pictures was an ice cream and seeing a smoke dense screen. it's not the same any more

Hi Lena and Harry---yes I remember when Bill Tarmey sang that song to his wife on "This is your Life"--it was a really moving moment, I thought.
Of course Bette Midler's version was popular because of the film-- I really could not say whose was my favourite version--Matt's would have been, if he had sung it, I am sure, but it probably was not around when he was singing.
Another good choice from you---there seems no end to the amount of great tunes from way back. I cannot remember the last time I went to the cinema--it's not the same now!! Nothing is!!
Here's one you don't here much anymore--
"There's a small Hotel" another good Matt-type song

Hi Marian, we also haven't visited a cinema for years. It used to be a regular night out, but the interest isn't there now somehow. We enjoy the theatre.
"There's a Small Hotel" would be perfectly suited for Matt, a great Lorenz Hart and Richard Rogers number. It has been recorded by numerous singers, but among the first that comes to mind is Ella Fitzgerald, one of our favourite female vocalists.
How about these two very early Sinatra songs for Matt then Marian.
" I Couldn't Sleep A Wink Last Night" and "This Is A Lovely Way To Spend An Evening"

I'm "listening again" to the 11th of June David Jacobs Collection. He's playing "I Can't Get Started", a wonderful song but sung poorly by David Jacobs' favourite, Frank Sinatra.
This is a song perfect for Matt Monro. Did he ever sing it? It would have been interesting to change the American references to British ones.
Now, he's playing a bland version of "My Ship" by Ute Lemper, who usually sings quite well. I prefer Doris Day's passionate version. Did Matt Monro ever record "My Ship"?

Hi Paul--I do not think that Matt recorded either of those songs you mentioned. Although he did sing "I've grown accustomed to her face" from "My Fair Lady"--one of the best versions of that song that I have heard. But some really interesting suggestions still coming up.
In fact I have just thought of another one, but just backtracked to make sure noone else had suggested it---some really lovely songs have been chosen--but here is my next one--
"Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered"-- A real classic.
And also another one that I love
"Thou Swell"
I'm sure Matt would have done fabulous versions of these songs.

Hi Paul, we are Sinatra fans and possibly have everything that he's recorded, but your mention of the song "I Cant Get Started" can only bring one name to mind and that's the amazing trumpeter Bunny Berigan. Everyone who claims to be a fan of the Big Band Era would or should have this recording.
Marian, Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered would be a perfect song for Matt, and does anyone else remember how we all went crazy over pianist Bill Schneiders recording of this song released in the late Fifties or thereabouts, (giving away our ages )
but Thou swell would also suit Matt'style of singing, always reminds us of June Allyson singing this song in the musical "Three Little Words"
As we've been discussing Perry Como, we could imagine Matt singing these two that Perry recorded. " And I Love You So" and " Prisoner Of Love"

Hi Lena and Harry--I have been trying for ages to remember the film that June Allyson sang "Thou Swell"---now I have the answer--I saw it on one of the "Thats Entertainment" shows, but still could not remember.
I would have been almost sure that Matt had already recorded "And I love you so" it would definately have been his type of song---I am not sure that I know "Prisoner of Love". I do not remember Bill Schneider either--I think at that time in the late 50's I was just into pop music mostly--my tastes have changed greatly since then.
With "Bewitched" I love it when they sing the beginning---
"He's a fool, and don't I know it, but a fool can have his charms" etc.
So many singers leave this bit out---and I love the extra long version with Rod Stewart and Cher. I think one of my favourite versions of "Thou Swell" is by The Supremes and Diana Ross.

Hi Mariana44, Lena and Harry and all. I have checked on the Internet Mariana44, and "Thou Swell" is from the film "Word's and Music" from 1948, starring June Allyson as you say, plus an all star cast including Perry Como (coincidence) and Judy Garland.

And I Love You So
I don't think Matt Monro recorded this Don McLean hit. What a pity as he would have brought that extra special meaning to this lovely song.
