More Matt On DVD

Post by karl » Wed Aug 24, 2011 9:53 am

Over the past year or so Odeon Entertainment has released dvd's by Alma Cogan, Shirley Bassey, Frankie Vaughan & David Whitfield to name a few.

The dvd's inlcude some of the singer's shows and also guest appearances on other shows, I wondered if such a release by Matt would be possible?

I know that Michele as I have them all but there has to be more footage in the archives, that was really my question.

There's not enough in this country to fill a disc and everything else from abroad is prohibitively expensive. At the moment a follow isn't possible but then we said that about Matt at the BBC 18 years ago. Things change and when they do we pounce - watch this space.

Michele I find that very sad for an artist of Matt's calbre, I have filled a whole dvd of Jack Jones transferred from video and recorded over the years.

I also find it strange that your dad was never offered a tv series unless he was and had other engagements at the time?

If they had recorded him at Talk Of The Town that would have been something, I never did get inside that venue the one time we were booked for Dusty she took illl on her opening night.

Matt did have his own series back in 1961 on Reduffusion - All now gone like so much of Matt's TV work.

90 - 95% of his TV & Radio work was wiped - He was so unlucky in this respect.

How many Eurovisions are missing 2 - 1956 (probably never recorded) & 1964 (the only copy apparently distroyed in a fire not long after broadcast) Matt was of course on in 1964

All Royal variety performances exist from 1960 to the present day except for (who knows why) 1965 - 68. Matt appeared in 1966. Frustratingly some parts of 1966 exist, but NOT Matt's performance!

If Matt appeared in a series where many episodes survive, you can bet that Matt's episodes are lost

BBC Morecambe & Wise 1968 - Gone
Picadilly Palace 1967 - Gone
Dave Allen Tonight..... Gone
London Palladium shows - Gone
I could go on........

Matt DID record a performance at The Talk Of The Town - Guess what? Gone!!!

However Matt's guest appearences on Tony Bennett's shows at Talk Of The Town do survive but apart from the one performance on DVD already the rest is tied up in red tape.

Richard I iknow many great artists had their shows wiped and I feel those responsible should be shot, can you imagine if all the movie classics had been wiped? Those were the great artists finest moments and they are gone forever.
However it' snot just black & white that were wiped, Dusty was the first artist to have a colour special on BBC 2 (guess where from Talk Of The Town) and we all know what happened to that too!

We never had a tv in 1961 so missed Matt's shows but going back to my original post, the dvd of Alma Cogan is wonderful to see and all her guests too, Winifred Atwell who also displayed a nice line in comedy, a very young Adam Faith and Cliff Richard, Everly Bros and many more. Thank God not all the old footage was lost, as for Dusty's BBC shows that were released on dvd some of them were found in Jamaica of all places!
