Kathhy Mattea is an American Country singer--but not one of the best-known ones.

Yes, I heard that too--also that David will be playing tracks from it on his show.

And believe it or not--I STILL have not received my copy--but all my Mathis friends love it. I have ordered another one from HMV, so hope that it will arrive VERY SOON!!

In this case, won't you end up with 2 copies?

By the way Mariana, whenever there is a new Johnny Mathis release, do you usually purchase the U.S version or the U.K one?

From the days of vinyl, I have noticed a difference in the sound quality between US & UK merchandise be it records or CD.

To my ears, the US version is not as clear as the UK recording but the bass is heavier. Of course the Japanese versions are the cleanest as those Japs can even reduce the width of Shirley Bassey's waist on the cover of I Am What I Am besides airbrushing her face free of wrinkles and (even) pores! The Japs also speeded up her voice to make her sound younger so her "I Am What I Am" album sounds better in Japan.....not quite as lethargic.

Yes Terence-I could well end up with 2 copies, but I should be able to sell the spare copy.

In this instance I am buying the Uk version, because it is not available in US until May--which is most unusual.

I have bought several from USA--but cannot notice a difference in the sound.

It's Not Unusual

Post by paul jh » Mon Mar 03, 2008 4:40 pm

It's not at all unusual that Johnny Mathis' CD is out much later in the US. We always get good music late or not at all. :x  I'm still in shock that Goldfrapp's new CD was released only one day after the UK release. Of course, it's hard to find it in any store---not that we have any quality record stores remaining in this country. At least it's only a 7 hour flight to find real and excellent record stores. :)

Perhaps they are holding the Johnny Mathis CD for the US Mothers Day in May or for a big PBS promotion.

It got to #29 on the UK album chart, which is quite good. :D

This morning I drove to work listening to Lisa Stansfield's first album Affection: All Around The World, You Can't Deny It, What Did I Do For You, Affection, Live Together ... what wonderful songs! :D :) 8)

Paul

About 10 years ago Amanda and I visited the west coast of the US.
At the time I was heavily into Jefferson Airplane and had read about a most wonderful record store that dated back to the flower power revolution of the mid 60's.
It is located on Haight & Ashbury, the 'famous' San Francisco Hippy district, and I couldn't wait to visit the store to spend a day searching through all they had to offer.
I have to say that this trip was the only disapointment of my several visits to the States.
I didn't feel safe in the area, I was expecting ageing hippies harking back to a Summer of Love, but it was populated by scary people!
The store was very poor also, and whilst I did pick up about 3 bargain Laserdiscs, I was sooooo disapointed with the choice of music.

What is your local record store called, Paul?
Do you visit it often?

I'm a bit perplexed by your San Francisco tale, Gray. The city is overrated and full of vagrants, but that Haight Asbury has become trendy, almost upscale. There was a large Tower Records in San Fran, but in a different area. It was pretty good, but not as good as the store on the Sunset Strip in Hollywood and my local Tower Records --- sadly now all closed.

My local record store? HMV at 150 Oxford Street and Zavvi at Oxford Street and Tottenham Court Road. I try to visit as often as I can. :)

Today I've been listening a lot to the fab new song After Hours by We Are Scientists. It's all over Radio 1 and 2 and the commercial UK stations. Another example of an American group who receives no airplay in the US, but becoming huge in the UK. Their new album doesn't even have a scheduled release date in the US. :?

:)
Very funny comment regarding HMV :)

Is there no record store close to where you live?
Sorry Paul, I didn't explain myself properly!
Within the Haight Ashbury district there is a street that contains a 'famous' record store, that was the epicentre for the flower power movement.
It was on this street, that Amanda felt very scared because it was full of undesireables.
Hope that helps! :)

We love San Francisco generally though! :)
The Tower Records store was awesome when we were there, yes, agreed! :)

I have heard of We Are Scientists!

I'm very impressed that you know We Are Scientists. I think it's a great name for a band.

There are very few record stores in Washington. I went to an independent one on Sunday night and it was terrible: no selection, poor merchandising. It made me long for HMV and Zavvi so much. Borders Books sells CDs but it's not the same as a true music and entertainment store.

Right now I'm listening to Alan Titchmarsh's Sunday programme. Always required listening each week. Earlier he played "La Di Dah" by Jake Thackray. :?: Are any of you familiar with this singer?

Yes Jeff, Jake Thackray was well known over here in the 70's, with his witty songs and distinctive voice :)

Listening to Matt's 2 on 1 CD This Is the Life/Here's To My Lady tonight :D ................but it is in mono

Paul:

We have quite a large Borders in the York City Centre, I LOVE cd hunting in there! :)
They have a fab jazz & classical section.
If you ever visit York, I would love to take you round all the record stores.
We have a couple of independant shops plus HMV, Zavvi & Borders.

Robert:

What if I send you my copy of 'This is the Life..' and you play both copies together at the same time with a split second difference between the two.
Hey Presto! - Reverb! :)

When I was first collecting Jack Jones LPs, I used to buy them from a record store in Amarillo, Texas, from a Rick Rhea, who always had a fantastic selection of "oldies." He is now US rep for the UK branch of the Sinatra Society I believe.
Marian :D
