Marian(a)
Thanks for your reasonable reply. After I had posted my
clarifying quote I thought: 'I've done it now; chances are
Marian will banish me from her thoughts until the twelvth
of never and I'll be left with only misty memories of her
companionship in the Forum.'
However, it goes to show that our Matt is a tough act to follow.

8) :) I was fortunate enough to receive in the post last week a Johnny Mathis CD of songs from Hollywood musicals arranged by the great Henry Mancini. I wonder who could have sent it to me? The entire CD is excellent, but I'm particularly struck by the 6 minute medley that includes It Could Happen To You (one of the best songs ever written) and But Beautiful (I believe that's the title; it's lovely) and one or two others. JM sings them so well. :?: Have all of you heard that medley? If not, I'd highly recommend tracking it down. He also does an interesting interpretation of Time After Time with the opening verse.

That cd is called "The Hollywood Musicals" and has some great tracks on it--one of my very fave JM cd's.

The medley that Paul refers to is a Johnny Burke/Jimmy Van Heusen Medley, and includes "Moonlight becomes you" " It could happen to you" and "But Beautiful" .

Glad you are enjoying it, Paul.

Hi Keith, Marian and Paul/Jeff

It's interesting to see Marian say that some people think JM is no longer around. He is not "fashionable" in the way he once was, for example when he had a revival in the late 1970s, and I guess that is why so few of his many albums have not been released on CD. Maybe he will have a revival again, like Andy Williams did, who was in his 70s when "Music To Watch Girls Go By" became a hit again.

Paul, I certainly agree about "The Hollywood Musicals" album JM made with Henry Mancini. All fine tracks, my favourite probably being "Crazy World", whose lyrics kind of reflect my cynical view of the world.

Yes Jon-I love that song too---I do not ever recall hearing it sung before--or since, by anyone else, but it obviously comes from a film---just checked--it was Victor/Victoria--that explains a lot, I guess.

Hi Mariana

Yes, you're right, "Crazy World" is from "Victor/Victoria". I think this was a kind of cross-dressing film starring Julie Andrews and directed by her husband (at least at the time), Blake Edwards(?). She is the only other person I have ever heard sing "Crazy World".

Nice to see Johnny Mathis CD " A Night To Remember" which incidently received a UK release ahead of it's USA issue,... in our latest " In Tune " magazine, with superb and praiseworthy comments about Johnny as an artist from editor Gerry Stonestreet.

Hi Mariana

Have you seen this pic of Johnny Mathis arriving at The Society of Singers 17th Annual ELLA Awards at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on May 19, 2008 in Beverly Hills, California? (Photo by Neilson Barnard/Getty Images)

:?: Doesn't anyone care about the 5th guy?  :)

:) He's Jerry Sharell, the President and CEO of my favourite charity, The Society of Singers, which grants scholarships to vocal students and assists singers in time of need. They also support an apartment building in the San Fernando Building especially for housing singers.
