Just got back from the cinema after watching the new version of Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.

I enjoyed it.
It was slow moving, and it felt as though enormous amounts had been cut out or reduced from the original book and tv show, but it was worth the price of a ticket. :)

Did anyone watch Shirley last night, a play on the early life of Shirley Bassey? It was similar to the recent book but I was amazed at how alike Ruth Begga was to the young Shirley.

No doubt it will be repeated John, they actually had a few Bassey things on last night after the play.

We watched it Karl and thought it was very good. Thought it could have gone further into her life though as it seemed a bit of an abrupt ending. :)

Marian they have copied it from the book, seems strange to end it almost at the start of her career when she's done so much since, unless the author decides to write a further volume? I quite enjoyed it but still think it strange to do a play while the artist is still very much alive!

I enjoyed it and agree with you Marian, and even though we thought we knew a lot about her early life it was still poignant to see it on screen.
Do we know what happened to her manager, how long he worked with her etc.?

I've just watched it on the IPlayer. Ruth Negga played the part of Shirley really well. A lot of people were living on the poverty line in those days, but one can understand the urge Shirley had to get out of it.
The actress Lesley Sharp played a good part as her Mother, her Mother incidently put it about a bit, but that's how a lot of peoples lives were.
Strangely enough Shirley married Kenneth Hume twice, but from a young age and beyond, she remained very vulnerable.
It did end abruptly though.

I introduced my eldest daughter to three of Hitcock's greatest movies over the weekend:
The Lady Vanishes
Vertigo
North by Northwest

What brilliant movies they all are.

And Cary Grant was a superb leading man, wasn't he?

I watched Arabesque yesterday, starring Gregory Peck and Sophia Loren, I love those flashy, 1960's movies.

However, it struck me how little I know about Ms Loren.
I could easily use Google to find out more, but would much prefer to ask my forum friends. :)

Does anyone know anything about Sophia Loren, please?
Thank you!

Excellent attractive actress as much at home in comedy roles as serious dramatic ones.
I remember her best for her comedy role with Peter Sellers in The Millionairess in the sixties. :D  Goodness, gracious me!
