WTH - Nicki Minaj at the Grammy Awards

Post by Eman » Mon Feb 13, 2012 4:49 pm

Don't know if the Grammy's were shown in the UK, but Nicki Minaj's performance was just downright disgusting and offensive. I'm not one against freedom of speech and expression, but when an artist makes a mockery out of peoples religion (I'm a Catholic) it's just wrong. Her performance was called "The Exorcisim of Roman" and she was mocking the Catholic faith. Her escort was a guy dressed up like the Pope. My non-Catholic Christian friends told me they turned off their tv's and were just plain disgusted. The performance is on YouTube, but I don't want to post the link as it's downright offensive to me and I don't want to offend anyone by posting it.

Oh well, just my rant and rave and will get down off my soap box!! Just wanted to vent!

the Grammys have not been on tv yet, to my knowledge-I even checked the Satellite channels for this week, but no sign.

I do not know who Nicki Minaj is-and I do not think I want to !

Hi Mariana, she's a female rapper. She makes Lady Gaga look like a Teletubbie compared to what she did last night.. also the less you know of her the better!!! :D

I saw the performance. I didn't like it, but she seems to be a talented rapper. I wouldn't buy any of her records.

Thank goodness she didn't win best new artist!

Wasn't Bon Iver's acceptance speech priceless?! I can't get into the music though. I was pulling for Skrillex to win.

The words "girl rapper" are enough to put me off.

I've liked some of the girl rappers through the years.

Eman -- Do you know why Drake wasn't nominated for best rap performance? His album got great reviews and I love his duet with Rihanna, Take Care. Perhaps it was released too late. He or Lupe Fiasco should have won. I was not pleased that Jay-Z and Kanye West won.

Bon Iver and Skrillex were nominated for best new artist. Bon Iver's music is a bit unusual: folk meets alternative. Marian -- you may have heard Birdy's cover of their song Skinny Love. Skrillex is an electronic musician from Los Angeles. He had a hit I like in last week's UK top 40 called Breakin' a Sweat.

Paul can't say why! I like Drake's albums and loved his duet with Rhianna. I don't like Jay-Z and Kanye West's duet! Snoop Dog and Whiz Khalifa are much better. Not much of a rap fan but I do like some.

Glad to hear you like Drake, Eman. I have very sensitive ears and don't like swearing in music. Is the latest Drake album really harsh in language? I know he does a track with an appalling title with Lil Wayne, whom I don't like at all. But many critics listed it as one of the best of 2011. The duet with Rihanna is captivating.

Paul, yeah there's a lot of swearing, but in some instances I'll buy the "clean edited version". Though most rap I won't listen to as it's gone down hill with the content. In raps infancy I liked a lot of it (i.e. Sugarhill Gang, The Sequence, Run DMC, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five), yet when it became all gangsta, pornographic, and just down right disrespectful, I didn't listen to it anymore.

Wow. I was going to mention that I liked Sequence, but I didn't think anyone would know what I'm talking about.

Okay, I won't buy the Drake album. My ears won't be able to handle that and I doubt there's a clean version for sale.

Forgot to mention that Glen Campbell did sound wonderful at the Grammys. Blake Sheldon did an admirable job on Southern Nights. I was hoping someone would sing Wichita Lineman. If this were the Brits Awards show, someone would have sung Wichita Lineman, as that seems to be a UK classic.

The Beach Boys sounded much better than Adam Levine (who can't sing a note, I don't understand how Sunday Morning was such a fab record) and Foster the People. I love their album, but they shouldn't sing live!

Paul, oh yeah the Sugarhill stuff was the first rap records I listened to. Though I know Blondie and Debbie Harry put it more into the mainstream with "Rapture".

Gotta agree with you on Glen C, Foster the People and the rest of the performances. I'm listening to this singer that I love at the moment Lana Del Rey. It's different as for me I find it monotone and drone sounding, but it's so unique I love it.

Glen Campbell singing "Wichita Linesman" has always been popular over here-propably one of his most popular tracks, along with "rhinestone Cowboy". But some of the tracks on his latest cd are really lovely songs. I really like Glen Campbell, and my fave track of his is "Dreams of the everday housewife" plus another one-not so well known--but I cannot remember the title just now-I will check it out.
