I spent a wonderful afternoon listening to the song stylist Nancy Wilson. She even sounds good live as there are a few live tracks in The Very Best Of Nancy Wilson which I have just received from Michele Monro. I won! I won!

Right now, it is after dinner and Nancy is crooning Satin Doll which is one of those songs I dare not learn to sing. The other 2 are In A Sentimental Mood & Prelude To A Kiss.
Aren't these Ellington songs difficult?
The chords are so complicated to play on my piano and the melodies do not register in my head.

Congratulations and well done Terence. Have a great time listening to Nancy Wilson. Satin Doll is a great number,
Duke Ellington on You tube is fantastic too.

Terence--have you [or anyone] heard the Duke Ellington Tribute that Johnnny Msthis did , on a cd called "In a Sentimental Mood"--the title track is stunning---but none of the tracks got any airplay on Uk radio,as far as I know. There are 18 tracks-including Satin Doll, and Prelude to a Kiss--but 6 tracks are just instrumental--including Satin Doll.

Unfortunately-apart from the title track, it is about my least favourite of JM's albums.

Well done on winning the quiz Terence. :!: I never even notice the quiz. I adore Guess Who I Saw Today and How Glad I Am by Nancy Wilson; both take you back to the cool vibe of the 1960s. 8)

I agree that those two Duke Ellington songs are quite difficult. I like both Mood Indigo and Satin Doll. I hope you are singing Lush Life. It wasn't written by Mr Ellington, but by the amazing Billy Strayhorn. I love the versions by Donna Summer, Linda Ronstadt, and the much too short-lived vocal group from Colorado, Rare Silk.

I did remember to bring my Jack Jones CD with me and got to listen to Wives and Lovers, Lollipops and Roses, The Shadow of Your Smile, What Now My Love, and several others. Sadly my CD doesn't have Call Me Irresponsible or Fly Me To The Moon.

Hi Paul

I can sing Lush Life but the audience is not there. My friends don't seem to like the song as much as I do. They don't understand why I have to flatten some notes to get the message across. Didn't Billy Strayhorn write this when he was just a teenager? I love the Nancy Wilson version. In my opinion, both Natalie Cole and Linda Ronstadt undersing the song without the necessary jazz flourishes. I heard the Donna Summer version a long time ago and can't find it anymore! Can you remind me on which album she recorded it Paul? Thanks.

Lush Life was on the "Donna Summer" album from 1982. It also included State of Independence (with Musical Youth). I wish you could hear Rare Silk's version with close four part harmony. I prefer it over Linda Ronstadt's. I don't believe I've heard Nancy Wilson sing it, so I'll have to search for it. I liked Natalie Cole's singles when she was starting out, but don't care for her singing of standards.

Just been watching "Portrait Of Petula" dvd tonight. This is from a tv special from 1969 and features guests Andy Williams and Sacha Distel. Some good performances and nice duets.

Just listening to Rita Macneil at the moment, a Canadian singer I have mentioned before and her most recent album "Songs My Mother Loved". She really is a good singer, she writes a lot of her own songs, but rgis album are covers of classics like "You Don't Know Me" and "Dear Hearts and Gentle People". 8)
