DAVY JONES OF THE MONKEES DEAD AT AGE 66

Post by Eman » Wed Feb 29, 2012 8:24 pm

This news just in a few minutes ago and saddens me deeply. Davy Jones was my first singing hero when I was a child when he sang with the Monkees. The cause was a heart attack. My Mom actually used the Monkees as a tool to help me to learn how to read, add, subtract and spell as I was not interested in learning the conventional way, she used the Monkees to get me interested.

(CBS News) Monkees lead singer Davy Jones has died, according to the medical examiner's office in Martin County, Fla. He was 66.

A spokesman at the medical office confirmed to CBSNews.com that it had received word of his death. "A possible autopsy may be performed after evaluation of the circumstances of the death and medical information," the spokesperson said.

A representative for Jones confirmed to the Associated Press that he died Wednesday morning of a heart attack in Indiantown, Fla.

Born in Manchester, England, Jones rose to stardom as a teen idol on the NBC comedy series, "The Monkees," which ran from 1966-1968. The show, which followed a rock group modeled after the Beatles, also starred Micky Dolenz, Michael Nesmith and Peter Tork. They were originally banned from playing their own instruments on the show. The Monkees scored several hits, including "Last Train to Clarksville" and "I'm a Believer."

After the show ended, the Monkees started to disband. Jones released a self-titled album in 1971. He's been active in the music business ever since and was on tour as recently as this year.

Very sad news. I believe he was a jockey for a while before his years in the Monkees.
R.I.P Davy.

Marian, yes he was. I'm really shook up about this so I had to leave work early and gave my staff the afternoon off. It hit me really hard.

When someone just a few years older than yourself passes away it seems to feel worse, my own cousin passed away almost a year ago and she was three years older than me.

Rest in Peace Davy.

I seem to think he was in Coronation Street in the early 60's, didn't he play a relative of Ena Sharples?

I also think he played "The Artful Dodger" in Oliver in a stage play before becoming a Monkee.

Davy was appearing on the Ed Sullivan show with the "Oliver" ensemble, which was on the same show as The Beatles appeared on. After hearing all the girls screaming and shouting Davy said to himself that's just what he wanted to do in life ...............to be a big pop singing star, and that's exactly what he did..................RIP Davy Jones :( ...................hard to believe the sad news :(

Yes, sad news; I rember watching their show when I was a kid, and I like some of their records. Did he have any medical history of heart problems, I wonder, or perhaps a history of it in his family? Seems cruel to go like that so suddenly as he wasn't old really. RIP, Davy.

Jon, Davy was an avid jogger and a vegetarian. No known history of heart problems or was it hereditary. I think it was one of those things a cruel deal of the cards.

Jackie Trent has written a nice tribute to Davey on her website. It's on the right hand side of the page if anyone wants to look.
