Not much of a footie fan, but as you know I do like Europe, so I've been watching some of these games. German ones were a bit mechanical and cold, but loved the Netherlands ones, especially last night!

BTW does anyone why there is this confusion over what to call Netherlands/Holland comes from? The BBC abbreviated the countries names on the score line to NET and FRA but their commentators kept calling it Holland. As far as I am aware (ie from what the other half who lived in Netherlands for 3 years) that is akin to referring to England as 'Yorkshire' or 'Lancashire' ie Holland is only part of the Netherlands.

Hi Michael,
The Netherlands, as the name implies, means
low countries. It is bordered by Belgium to the south
and Germany to the east. Belgium broke away from
the Netherlands about five centuries ago; however
Holland retained the name, hence the confusion.
What a sparkling performance they put on last night, though.

Hi Lena & Harry
I'm glad you share my concern for our abused,
benighted footballers. Perhaps an adaptation of the
old cry is apt: overworked and overpaid.

A reporter in today's newspaper said Good Luck to Wayne Rooney and his bride and added that they have worked to pay for this day, and compared them with.... SHAMELESS PARASITES IN PARLIAMENT AND ROYALS who leech off the rest of us.  ... it continued and ranted on for nearly an entire page,
There was a hint of a clue in this article that led us to believe this reporter had got out the wrong side of the bed.

You weren't reading the 'Morning Star' again were you L&H   I've not got a high regard for the cult of celebrity that a lot of the press goes in for in the UK. Even the BBC had Breakfast Time reporters in Italy covering this story, which I don't expect from them (GMTV maybe  ). That said, this seems to have been a lower key wedding in better taste than that one in Ireland with the thrones at a castle a few years back!!

Apparently the dear old 'Daily Mail' has had a dig at the Rooneys for being nouveau riche and not 'proper' middle class snobs (thats according to a report in todays Guardian!) Apparently, Colleen had to send a guide to all the guests on how to avoid being chav-ish in their dress and behaviour.

As far as the Royals go, I have a healthy regard for the current young Royals. I include the Princess Royales and the Linley's in that lot. They do a great job, work hard and offer far better value than those idiots of all colours in Parliament! There's only a dozen or so of them that I have any real respect for, which out of over 600 is pretty shocking!

L&H - rereading the article I referred to in the Guardian (i.e. from start to end this time  ), it looks like it was the one that you were referring to! Doh!!

I read somewhere that Colleen wanted all the women guests to wear black---so that they did not take the attention away from her !!

And a lower key wedding at over £500.000.00 pounds--I do not think so!!

But on saying that--the little I have seen of Colleen on TV and pics--I really do like her. Wayne Rooney on the other hand, seems a little underwhelming!!

Mike, this article was in fact in The Sun although the controversial author did once write for the GUARDIAN, and was once married to an author of another newspaper ( a bitter divorce we gather) who had different views about the Rooneys and this may have been the war like reply, but in any case we agree with you on all counts.
We also have lttle regard for the press and media who chase these so called celebrities who have ammased these fortunes in this money orientated world.
To be honest we couldn't care less about their life styles, but on the other hand if some of it goes to charity like The Becks do, all well and good.
We agree with the articles statement about the parasites in Parliament and the polititions creaming off tax payers money.
For those against this disfunctional Royal family (as they like to call them should perhaps take a look at the duties and the amount of engagements that the majority of them ) which as you rightly say Mike are mainly the younger ones apart from the Queen and Duke. There are skivers of course.
When the Princess Royal came to our son's residence to open up a new part of the building and the some new bungalows, she had already attended one engagement that morning and after leaving had Two more to attend that afternoon.
So it's thumbs up for for the Royals from us.

Found out not too long ago that the Duchess of Kent, has been visiting a school on a council estate, in this area EVERY week for many years just to help with the teaching of the youngsters - I think she is teaching music classes 8) :)

Although she has had her own health problems in the past, I believe The Duchess of Kent to be one of the most hard working of the Royals who does many things behind the scenes.
The hospice/palliative care centre I worked at for seven years, is named after her - Duchess of Kent House in Reading.

Golly - is she still going, the Duchess of Kent that is. I've met her a few times when she has been shopping - one time was in Harrods. One of my colleagues had approached to ask if she wanted us to call the VIP suite (as we were instructed to whenever we spotted a 'known' person shopping) - she replied that she didn't want anything to do with 'that fawning man' and she'd rather pay for things and take her shopping away with her! She is lovely, and as you say always very busy!

As far as the other Royals go, I've a lot of time for Prince Charles, with all his green ideals. He's actually grown into his age now, as he seems to have been 60 for most of his life! I also approve of his wife who seems quite charming in a horsey/country set kind of way. Prince Andrew is going to be another Prince Philip, working hard for business in the UK while making the odd gaff here and there. Prince Edward errm. Well, moving on, The Princess Royal is marvellous, the hardest working of all of them.

William and Harry have had a hard life in so many ways - the constant attention, the stories of their parents problems before and after their mothers death, the ongoing (although thankfully subsiding) speculative frenzy over Diana's death, and now of course the constant attention on their private and work lives. They both must find their Service life a welcome haven from all that.

Germany through to the Semi's - I enjoyed last night game - can I remind everyone that had England made the finals, this is the stage we would be going out of penalties. :)
