Terence some years ago Laserlight released a few of Jack's RCA albums on cd and I thought they would have released them all, since then the odd few have been released in Japan at very high prices - I bought one or two when I was there.

Considering the amount of albums that Jack and Johnny have recorded and the fact that Johnny has been on the one label for so long it's amazing that Columbia have not released the entire back catalogue. I realise some of Johnny's were released in recent years on 2 on 1 but ony in the States and at high prices.

Over here we got the entire back catalogue of Petula and Dusty which was fantastic, what can we do to persuade Mr. Jones & Mr. Mathis I wonder? :)

Chances Are' Mathis Will Bring Back Memories

Legendary crooner never dreamed career would top 50 years

by Paul Hyde
Greenville (South Carolina) News, April 1, 2012

What kind of mood can fans of Johnny Mathis expect at the legendary crooner's concert this Saturday at the Peace Center?

Chances are it'll be smooth and mellow.

"My show offers kind of a nice, relaxed atmosphere -- no dancing girls," says Mathis with a laugh as he speaks on the phone from his home in Los Angeles.

"I'll sing some songs that hopefully will be familiar to people, the sort of songs they may have grown up listening to," adds the velvet-voiced entertainer whom Johnny Carson once dubbed "the best ballad singer in the world."

Mathis always features his much-loved big hits, including "Misty," "Chances Are" and "It's Not For Me To Say."

"I start right off with 'When I Fall in Love' and go on to sing all the other familiar tunes," says Mathis, who in more than 50 years of performing has sold 350 million albums worldwide.

Mathis is the third best-selling recording artist of the 20th century, after only Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra.

At 76 years young, Mathis doesn't do anything half way. He'll be accompanied by a 26-piece orchestra.

"They're musicians I've been performing with for almost 50 years," Mathis says. "We're all really good pals."

Mathis also will spotlight a few numbers, accompanied only by his longtime guitarist Gil Reigers, from his most recent country album "Let It Be Me -- Mathis in Nashville." Songs such as the title number and "Shenandoah" are particularly poignant for Mathis.

"I love that album because it brings back memories of my dad," Mathis says. "Those are the first songs I heard my dad singing. He was from Texas. My dad was a pretty good singer and sang a lot when he was young, before he had seven kids."

At the Peace Center, Mathis will be joined by comedian and singer -- and fellow avid golfer -- Gary Mule Deer, who'll perform a 20-minute set.

Mathis' current round of concerts is being billed as his 56th annual tour.

Did he think when he made his first recording at age 19 that he'd be singing concerts a half-century later?

"Isn't is amazing, when you're a kid and starting out, you think your music career will last for six months until the new crop of singers comes in," Mathis says. "I started out in the beginning of the rock era. Elvis was big. It was all at a high decibel level and here I was with these low-level romantic songs. I didn't think my music was loud enough to compete.

"I was very surprised and happy that I was able to put a stamp on some of these little romantic ballads," Mathis says. "I'm thrilled at this stage of my life that I can continue to perform."

Nat King Cole was an early influence for Mathis.

"He was my vocal hero for many years," Mathis says. "I thought of him as a mentor."

Born in the small Texas town of Gilmer, Mathis first gained fame as an athlete -- particularly in the high jump -- at San Francisco State and had been asked to attend the trials for the 1956 Olympic teams that would travel to Melbourne, Australia.

Mathis went on to break records -- but in music instead. Among his many other accomplishments, Mathis has had five of his albums on the Billboard charts simultaneously, an achievement equaled by only two other singers, Sinatra and Barry Manilow.

Mathis' other great passion is golf. When not performing, he tries to golf five days a week.

"I think I've made most of my long-lasting friends through golf," Mathis says. "Oh, and I just had my ninth hole-in-one about a week ago."

No singers or dancers with JM then .. That's what most good singers have always done.:)
We wonder how far some of the so called singers would get today, or how long they would last without all those contortionists jumping about in the background and noisy backing singers to cover up any mistakes, but going back to all these reality winners I think we have already found this out.
There has been some nice articles on JM recently in the "IN TUNE" magazine.
Many singers like Johnny enjoy their golf.
Al Martino told us that he got his handicap down to Eight :)

When Barbra Streisand's friends and family wanted a singer to perform for her 70th birthday in April, there was no doubt who they'd call — Streisand's professed favorite, Johnny Mathis. It was a surprise, and a success.

"She was over the moon," says Mathis, 76, laughing. "I tried to sing a couple of things I thought she might like. The first song I sang, 'You'll Never Know,' I hit that one right on the nail. The second one was a song from (Streisand's movie) 'Yentl,' and I forgot the words! She said, 'Don't worry about it, keep going! Keep going!' "

He sort of knew already that he's Streisand's favorite singer. "She's kind of mentioned it a couple of times," Mathis says, modestly. "Maybe if she says it one more time, I'll believe it!"

Mathis, who performs tonight at MotorCity Casino's Sound Board, is also aware that his 1957 hit "Wonderful, Wonderful," played a key role in a scene in the "Desperate Housewives" finale. It was as a bedridden Karen McCluskey, dying of lung cancer, asks that a vinyl single of "Wonderful, Wonderful" be played over and over. Flashbacks from the series are seen as McCluskey's life slowly fades away. Despite the song's buoyant lyrics and Mathis' youthful joy, the mood is bittersweet.

The singer heard about his song being used, and watched it as a clip on the Web. "It was just so well done, and it was very sad," he says. "I was thrilled to be included."

The emotional texture of Mathis' voice, that palpable feeling, lends itself to such moments, and has always been intrinsic to his sound.

"When you sing or when you record, it's of the moment," Mathis explains. "I get inspiration from fantasizing, and I actually believe what I'm singing, every word of it. That's why it's so wonderful to sing music that's so well written. Over the years I've been so fortunate that I can continue to sing songs that I recorded years and years ago. I never get tired of hearing those wonderful words, and of course the pretty melodies that I've been able to get from these songwriters."

Currently, he's poring over possible songs for an album of duets he'll record soon. He hopes to sing with, among others, Michael McDonald, Aretha Franklin and, yes, Streisand.

"She's doing a duets album too, so I said, 'Sing for me and I'll sing for you,' " Mathis says.

It was 1956 and Mathis was just 21 when he flew to New York to record his first sides for Columbia Records. Born in Texas, when he was a small boy his family moved to San Francisco. There he excelled in both sports — he was a high jumper and hurdler — and singing, taking lessons from a private coach in exchange for chores.

At 19, he was set to try out for the Olympics, but received an invitation from Columbia Records at the same time. At that key fork in the road, he opted for music. That first Columbia album of jazz standards didn't catch on with radio or fans, but his second one, an album of pop ballads (including "It's Not For Me To Say" and "Wonderful, Wonderful") produced by Mitch Miller, was an instant hit, buoyed by an appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show. A few years later came "Misty" and other hits.

Nat King Cole was among his early mentors. "He was a dear, dear friend to me and took me under his wing and was very kind to me before he passed away," Mathis says.

He didn't make it to the Olympics as a track star, but Mathis didn't give up athletics altogether. He's still an avid golfer, his greatest passion apart from cooking. "When my day begins, I always figure out a way to get a golf game in as well as do all the stuff I'm supposed to be doing," he said. "It reminds me of what I've had to go through in a career, because golf is the most difficult game in the world, it requires so much attention and your complete and total absorption. It's a great outlet."

Mathis also stays in shape to keep his voice in tune.

"When I was in high school and college I was a high jumper and a hurdler, I almost got a chance to go to the Olympics as a high jumper," he says. "I kind of got into a routine of exercising, and I think it's helped my singing. It's kept my stomach muscles strong, which is where you support all the muscles in your vocal cords. I've been very lucky, I haven't had too many problems vocally. The occasional bout of laryngitis, other than that my voice has maintained the strength to sing as often as I want

Hi Mariana and Karl

I've done a bit of research on the upcoming Johnny Mathis re-releases; you can get the full details from the website of Real Gone Music, which lists the albums and the tracks on them. The previously Unreleased Broadway album contains the following:

- Aint It De Truth
- Get Out of Town
- Independent
- Comes Once In A Lifetime
- You'd Better Love Me
- Don't Rain On My Parade
- When I'm Not Near To The Girl I Love
- Ridin' High
- She Loves Me
- Manhattan (previously released on a compilation)
- Hello Dolly (previously released on a compilation)
- Of Thee I Love (previously released on a compilation)

Great news for Mathis fans, of course, as well as the other releases: I'm especially pleased with the release of "The Wonderful World of Make Believe" which contains his superb recording of "The Sands of Time" from "Kismet". Let's hope they'll be released in the UK soon.

Hmm, like Marian, I can't recall ever seeing "Don't Rain On My Parade" on a Johnny Mathis album. "Of thee I Love" is on a compilation, though I can't remember which one now.
