Last Choir Standing.

Post by Lena & Harry Smith » Wed Jul 02, 2008 5:44 pm

This is a new show beginning on Saturday evenings on BBC 1 beginning this Saturday the 5th July.
It is choirs from all over the UK performing in front of a panel and the judges are singers Russell Watson and Sharon D Clark and conductor Suzy Digby.
Presenters for the show are Nick Knowles and Myleene Klass.
A thousand choirs originally entered and this will be the usual elimination contest until the best is finally chosen.

I am really looking forward to this series--the trailers that I have seen sound as though the programme will be excellent--and it is something a little different. About time we had a good programme on Saturday night--the weekend tv over the last few weeks has been dire !! Last Sunday night, I did not even switch the Tv on-it was that bad.

It will be good to see Russell Watson again--not sure who Sharon D Clark is--but if it is like any of the other reality shows--she could make her name !!

This sounds like being a good programme doesn't it, and probably one Paul would enjoy. Really looking forward to it. :D

It was a little patchy to start with this week, but it will get better as the weeks go by and the competition hots up.
There are some great choirs there, and we were surprised at the elimination of Two tonight that we thought were good, but some had to go.
There was no doubt that the dismal sound of The meditators would go, but the music experts on the panel  Sharon couldn't make up her mind about one choir and kept those hopefuls in tears, and hanging on and then asked them to come back so that she could hear them again. We wondered if her hearing aid had packed up.
Suzy Digby said that with her expertize, she new immediately if a choir was good and in tune. Shouldn't really need anyone else on the panel then.
Russell was really enjoying himself as well as being fair and honest.

I agree Lena and Harry, it was a little patchy, but as with most of these kinds of programmes, they hopefully improve as time goes on.
I thought they were going to put them all through at first, but then they started being rejected.
It must be tough to disappoint so many hopefuls all at once.
I thought Russell was the best judge, and he looked well and relaxed too.

I also thought it was great to see Russell looking so well, and happy.

I was surprised at one or two that went, and I think my 2 favourites were that last 2--the one with the "soul singer" , and the last group who sang "Moon River", so beautifully despite their handicaps---they put some of the other mad, weird, talentless, show-off contestants in some of the other reality shows to shame.

I am not too sure about the 2 female judges-I think they were trying too hard to be "fair" and "nice".

But overall, I really enjoyed it.

PS to Keith--or anyone--should I have said "untalented" rather than "talentless"--or are either correct---"talentless" just sounded right for me in that sentence.

Mariana, you got it right, talentless is the correct
adjective in the adjectival phrase: 'talentless, show-off contestants'.
Speaking of adjectival phrases, I'm reminded of earlier
discussions regarding whether 'Singles Day' should have an
apostrophe after the second s in Singles to show possession.
I don't think the matter was clarified. It depends on the context
of the phrase. If it was intended to be an adjectival phrase
then no apostrophe would be required. Singles would simply
be descriptive. If, however, the intention was to express
a noun phrase then an apostrophe would be needed to
show possession. E.g. Three weeks holiday (adjectival phrase).
Three weeks' holiday (noun phrase) I hope this explanation
clears the matter up.

I was disappointed with this show tonight, but not with the choirs that we barely had a chance to see, but the hour was practically taken up with the boring panel who appear to be clueless of what is good singing and what isn't and there seems little progress since last week.

I tend to agree with Harry and Lena--not enough choir and too much panel.

It is going to be tough to get into the last 6. I do not think I could pick a winner at this stage, especially as some of them did not seem so good this week--but I guess some of that was down to song choice.

I was hopeful of this programme but turned off after ten minutes. And what is an actress from HolbyCity doing judging a choir?

Good Question Jon, she's probably got the bug, she was on the panel of judges with 300 kids performing for the Opal Choir project at the Royal Albert Hall.
This week may improve, Five choirs out of the remaining Fifteen will be singing Two songs each.

I see there's yet another new reality show starting soon about Dance and Diet. They showed bits the other morning on 'Breakfast.'
One of the professionals from 'Strictly' is one of the judges.
It looks like it might be watchable.

It is Karen and Matthew--both from "Strictly" on this programme. Karen was always one of my favourite dancers, along with Lilia.

I copied it, but not had chance to watch it yet.
