Wise words

Post by Michele Monro » Tue Nov 22, 2011 6:57 pm

I grew up in the 50's with practical parents. A mother, God love her, who washed aluminum foil after she cooked in it, then reused it. She was the original recycle queen, before they had a Name for it... A father who was happier getting old shoes fixed than buying new ones. Their marriage was good, their dreams focused. Their best friends lived barely a wave away. I can see them now, Dad in trousers, tee shirt and a hat, and Mom in a house dress, broom in one hand and dish-towel in the other. It was the time for fixing things. A curtain rod, the kitchen radio, screen door, the oven door, the hem in a dress, things we keep. It was a way of life, and sometimes it made me crazy All that re-fixing, eating, renewing, I wanted just once to be wasteful. Waste meant affluence. Throwing things away meant you knew there'd always be more.

But then my mother died, and on that clear summer's night, in the warmth of the hospital room, I was struck with the pain of learning that sometimes there isn't any more. Sometimes, what we care about most gets all used up and goes away...never to return. So... While we have it.. it's best we love it... And care for it.... And fix it when it's broken.... And heal it when it's sick. This is true... For marriage.... And old cars... And children with bad report cards..... Dogs and cats with bad hips.... And aging parents..... And grandparents. We keep them because they are worth it, because we are worth it. Some things we keep. Like a best friend that moved away or a classmate we grew up with. There are just some things that make life important, like people we know who are special..... And so, we keep them close!

I received this from someone who thinks I am a 'keeper', so I've sent it to the people I think of in the same way... Now it's your turn to send this to those people that are "keepers" in your life. Send it back to the person that sent it to you if they too are a keeper. Good friends are like stars.... You don't always see them, but you know they are always there. Keep them close

Make do and mend is an old saying, maybe you've heard of it?

Isn't it a pity we can't hold on to our loved one's as long as we hold on to our possessions, and when you think about it the things we thought important in our youth are not so important when we get older, oh that we could give them all away to have our parents and family back!

THIS IS US!!! ( Some of us anyway!)

Senior citizens are constantly being criticized for every conceivable
deficiency of the modern world, real or imaginary.

We know we take responsibility for all we have done and do not blame
others.

HOWEVER, upon reflection, we would like to point out that it was NOT the
senior citizens who took

The melody out of music,

The pride out of appearance,

The courtesy out of driving,

The romance out of love,

The commitment out of marriage,

The responsibility out of parenthood,

The togetherness out of the family,

The learning out of education,

The service out of patriotism,

The Golden Rule from rulers,

The nativity scene out of cities,

The civility out of behaviour,

The refinement out of language,

The dedication out of employment,

The prudence out of spending,

The ambition out of achievement or God out of government and school.

And we certainly are NOT the ones who eliminated patience and tolerance
from personal relationships and interactions with others!!

And, we do understand the meaning of patriotism, and remember those who
have fought and died for our country.

Just look at the Seniors with tears in their eyes and pride in their
hearts as they stand at attention with their hand over their hearts!

YES, I'M A SENIOR CITIZEN!

I'm the life of the party..... Even if it lasts until 8 p.m.

I'm very good at opening childproof caps..... With a hammer.

I'm awake many hours before my body allows me to get up.

I'm smiling all the time because I can't hear a thing you're saying.

I'm sure everything I can't find is in a safe secure place, somewhere.

I'm wrinkled, saggy, lumpy, and that's just my left leg.

I'm beginning to realize that aging is not for wimps.

Yes, I'm a SENIOR CITIZEN and I think I am having the time of my life!

Spread the laughter

Share the cheer

Let's be happy

While we're here.

Go Green - Recycle Parliament!!

Maybe I'd rather be wasteful and replace Parliament.

Yes, very true Marian, and no we are not responsible for the decline in manners and the social changes that have taken place, but as OAPs we have to make the most of what we can get out of life, and here is some advice that what was in todays newspaper and we should take heed.
In the US, 1000 people joined in a survey. It said that being on the PC, the internet, sending messages and e-mails can help the older generation stave off Alzheimers disease. That's the good news.
The bad news is it has to be combined with physical exercise. :(
