What's In Your CD Player/iPod/MP3/Computer/Hi Fi, Right Now?
Just come back from holiday in Malta so trying to catch up on postings.
I see Paul can't get into the Brahms Symphonies. Well, they're not the lightest of pieces but are worthwhile if one perseveres. I found No 1 the most difficult to access but now really like it. Repeated listenings at full concentration are the key. Brahms also wrote a lot of other, shorter, orchestral stuff - I'd recommend the Variations on a Theme of Haydn (though not actually based on Haydn, paradoxically), the Double Concerto and the Academic Festival Overture. I also really like his two Piano Concertos and some of his songs.
On a lighter note, there is a new CD out called "Foot Tappers", which includes well known (mainly instrumental) music of the 60s, including the Peyton Place theme and some Shadows numbers: the sort of tunes one's heard before but can't name, including one called "Classical Gas". Recommended.

Listening to Jo Stafford & Gordon McCrae's CD "The Old Rugged Cross" on EMI Gold.
Was this recorded in 1962 I wonder or did EMI acquire the copyright that year?
Both of them sound so good together.
I can't believe this is my only Jo Stafford CD.
Any recommendations as to what other CD of hers I should purchase?
Thank you in advance.

The Rugged Cross was recorded on 1962 Terence.
We have this Cd plus some early albums, but perhaps the best to recommend would be the her own label releases Corinthians recordings are the studio sesssions that she recorded with her husband Paul Weston.
These are recordings from the 40s and into the 60s that have all been out on various compilations but are now bulked together and some Columbia recordings were purchased and later from Capitol by Jo and Paul and they formed their own label Corinthian going into later recordings.
