Hi again, Gray
I'm so glad you referred to Matt in the present tense -
yes he is the greatest. Having enjoyed my first listen
to Matt Swings, Nelson Sings made me feel that Matt
is indeed still with us. Hearing him sing anew with such
verve and typical mellifluity is heartwarming. It's almost
criminal that the film footage was wiped; however the
CD is a very acceptable second prize, reproduction problems
notwithstanding. Technical brilliance all round, I feel.
I loved the way Matt immediately corrected an wrong
preposition when introducing Nelson - neat!
The John F Kennedy March, aka The Boys of Wexford,
was a surprise. The song commemorates the Irish Rebellion
of 1798:
We are the boys of Wexford
Who fought with heart and hand
To burst in twain the galling chain
And free our native land.
There is also a poem entitled, The Memory of the Dead.
Who fears to speak of ninety-eight?
Who blushes at the name?
When cowards mock the patriot's fate
Who hangs his head in shame ...?
