A Billy Fury Question

Halfway To Paradise is one of the great records of the 60's but after the opening line"I Want To Be Your Lover" what is he saying on the next line?
It was on the radio this morning and I have the record but can never make out that line. Something like "But Your Friend Is ? ? ?

The second line is "BUT YOUR FRIEND IS ALL I'VE STAYED" Karl.

John I thought it was that, doesn't make a lot of sense - does it. I guess it was written that way to fit in with the song as usually you would add 'with' - oh well, that's songwriters for you!!!

Yes, I had to think about it first as well, I thought it didn't make sense at first, then when I read the first and second line together it clicked.

I remember being the same about Dusty Springfields song when it first came out...I could never get the following line to ... You Don't Have To Say You Love Me. but I have now.

Or as an ex-colleague of mine used to sing "You Don't Have To Say I'm Lovely, Just Because I Am". He made us all laugh, he should have taken it up for a living.
