Hello Young Lovers

Post by Gray » Thu Jul 13, 2006 8:15 pm

Hi Everyone

Been listening to Matt's version of Hello Young Lovers a lot recently, isn't it just wonderful?
The arrangement, the simple yet heartfelt translation of the lyrics, absolutely gorgeous.
And the final note he holds...makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.
This is why I love Matt Monro's music, simply the best.

Just thought I'd share with you all.

Gray

Thank's Gray, we know just what you mean. Matt''s version of "Hello Young Lovers" is just wonderful. How Matt holds those notes is incredible.
We are listening to Matt's CD The Collection right now and "For Once In My Life" is playing. Superb :D

Thanks for replying Lena & Harry,

I LOVE Matt's For Once In My Life, it's the style & swagger that I enjoy about it. Fabulous.
I grew up listening to Stevie Wonder's version, (I love Motown stuff) which is a very different rendition to Matt Monro's, but you've mentioned before elsewhere in the forum what a superb, 'standard' this song is.
How well it lends itself to so many interpretations.

Thanks again for replying!

Gray, this is favourable among many vocalists, Tony Bennett was possibly associated with this song before or at least as much as "I Left My Heart In San Francisco " Sinatra with a slight upbeat, and Michael Buble, all great renditions. :) :)

Marian. Another favourite of ours too "Hello Young Lovers " and for a complete change in tempo, how about Matt with the Nelson Riddle arrangement with "Strike Up The Band". :D

Hello all. "Strike Up The Band" was a song originally written for an old black and white musical film, starring Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney.

Lena and Harry, why the evil face after your comment's about "For Once In My Life"
"My Tears Will Fall Now That You're Gone,
I Can't Help But Cry, But I Must Go On" :(

Hi All

Hi Marian! Yes, Matt's Hello Young Lovers is fast becoming one of my all time faves as well! I have said it before and it's proof again, our great minds must think alike! :)
Lena & Harry, all these versions of For Once... I am familiar with, but I didn't know Mr Bennett's was THE version for a while.
(Thanks for that info. You two are my encyclopedia :) )
But I must say, I am far too biased! I like Matt's version the best!
The thing is with Matt Monro's voice, it's like discovering new songs - they might be 'standards' - but with the wonderful arrangements and Matt's voice, it's like opening a new door for me.
The more I track down his music, the more I listen, the more I hear.
Does this make sense?

Hope so! Eek.

Gray

It certainly does make sense Gray, and if we don't get any inner feelings of emotion or any effect when listening to voices such as Matt's then all we can say is that it's sad for those who don't.
Another song so connected to Tony Bennett Gray is "The Good Life", superb renditions by both Tony and Matt :D

Hello all. Yes, people who don't know about the GREAT Matt Monro and his lovely song's just do not know what they are missing, do they, POOR THING'S.

Val if you keep listening to MM you will find out your own personal favourites. For myself, I have a top 5 Matt favourites, but there are so many Matt song's that people love for different reason's. On another page "On Days Like These" has been mentioned today. 3 other heartbreaking ballads sung by Matt are "Portrait Of My Love" "Softly As I Leave You" and "Walk Away". In the right moment all these beautiful songs can bring tears to our eyes Val.
"My Tears Will Fall Now That You're Gone,
I Can't Help But Cry, But I Must Go On" :(

For some reason I rarely listen to Hello Young Lovers. Perhaps I prefer it sung by a woman. I'll listen to it many times this week-end. I Have Dreamed is one of my favourites; everything about it is wonderful. The tag is absolutely stunning.

For years, I only knew The Good Life by Tony Bennett. But now I can only listen to Matt Monro's version.

Val, I was a child when Matt Monro's music was originally popular and his music wasn't played too much in the United States, so I don't have special memories from the 1960s and early 1970s. But, since my first trip to London in 1990, I listen to Matt Monro more than any other artist and I have more CDs by him than anyone. So I'm making new memories with his music. It is timeless. Each time you listen to one of his songs, you'll discover a special nuance not heard before. And there are so many songs to discover.

You are right Robert, those who haven't heard of Matt's songs.
are missing out.
As far as we recall "Portrait Of My Love" was the first song of Matt's to be charted, so that makes it a bit special and so will always be included among most peoples favourites.
Paul, Matt's rendition of "I Have Dreamed" this is a beautiful song and what a great ending to this song too. Takes your breath away :D

Hello Lena and Harry, Paul, and all. Both "Hello Young Lovers" and "I Have Dreamed" are absolutely staggering songs when sung by Matt.
Yes "Portrait" was Matts first ever hit song, reaching #3 in the charts of 1960, as Paul would say a "huge" hit. 8) 8)
"My Tears Will Fall Now That You're Gone,
I Can't Help But Cry, But I Must Go On" :(
