TALKING OF QUIZZING....

Post by mariana44 » Mon May 28, 2012 7:24 pm

I did a wi quiz last week-the first for ages-but this one was a but strange--the first round was "streets" and he asked where Mott Street was--so I said New York, Manhattan-as featured in the song Manhattan-and I know it is a real street name as I have seen it in person.-but the answer was apparently Glasgow--which I have never seen when I was up there. So he would not allow my answer---but if I had known how it was going to end, i would have fought a bit harder--as we came 2nd--losing by one point--and each answer was worth 2 points-so if he had allowed it , we would have won by one point !

One of the other rounds was Tv catchphrases, which I was tempted to put our Joker on--but just as well we did not---here are 3 of the questions--whose are these catch phrases-

1 SIT DOWN ALFRED

2 OOOH PHILIP

3 MY TERRY'S AN ANGEL.

I do not think anyone got them right--so does anyone here want to have a go ??

I haven't a clue who is connected to those Three phrases Marian, but funnily enough, we have been to the BBC final heat for COUNTERPOINT quiz this evening at the Maida Vale Studios, with Paul Gambaccini quizmaster.
This was the studio in which Bing Crosby made his final recording, and the quiz was recorded in that very room.
Obviously the contestants were music buffs, but we actually knew several answers that they didn't know.
We have tickest for One of the semi-finals.taking place on June 11th.
Our club's Fish and Chip supper quiz is in a months time. Our table must do better than we did last year

Wish I could be with you at the quiz, as i love quizzing ! We had a good , reasonably successful quiz team in the WI--then 2 of our members died--one moved away, and we were left with only 2. However since then, we have had a few members to WI, and at our meeting next week, and I am going to ask for members to start a new quiz team-I will keep you updated. I have recently gone to a couple of quizzes on my own-but it is no fun to be stuck on the very end of the table, with an established team, that you do not know--and moreover would noit listen to my answers, and in one case sent in a missing answer, rather than try my answer, which was in fact correct !! So I will not be trying that again.

As to those questions, I do not know where that quizmaster dug them up, as to most of us, they could not be considered "Catchphrases"--perhaps he did not know what a "catchphrase" is !!

I would be surprised if anyone got them , so here are the answers--

1 This was somebody in "Heartbeat" [not sure who] talking to his dog.

2 Miss Jones--from "Rising Damp"--yes, she may have said "OOh Philip" a couple of times--but a Tv catchphrase--never.

3 we tried "June" for this one---as in "Terry & June"---but it was apparently Vera Duckworth, from Corrie, talking about her son Terry.
I never miss Corrie, and I do not remember her saying that phrase--she may well have done--but as a catchphrase--rubbish !!
