Love T.K.O.

Post by Gray » Wed May 23, 2012 11:01 am

Teddy Pendergrass' Love T.K.O. popped on my i-pod this morning, and it struck me what a marvelous song this is.
What makes it a bit different to me is how the verse has all the 'hooks', not the chorus as is usually the norm.
Hope there is another Love T.K.O. fan out there, Teddy Pendegrass is an artist who is sadly overlooked i.m.o.!

Gray, right here I'm a Teddy Pendergrass fan all the way from when he was with Harold Melvin and the Bluenotes. Teddy's sound or style is defined here as "Smooth Grooves" or "Quiet Storm" music, meaning music for romance and well other things. . Other classics are "Close The Door", "The Whole World Is Laughing At Me" and of course his duet with Whitney Houston "Hold Me". I

Did you know that Love T.K.O. was also a hit for English singer Clive Griffith who was better know for his duet with Celine Dion on "When I Fall In Love".

Hi Eman

I am pleased to read you are a fan!
I have not heard the Clive Griffith version of Love TKO so will check it out.

Have you seen any movies lately?
I saw the new Mel Gibson thriller 'What I did on my Summer Vacation' and enjoyed it, it was Mel going back to his Lethal Weapon days.

It had car chases, shoot ups in slo mo', even a fight in a toilet!
Plus the obligatory tart with a heart :)
What more can any guy ask for? :)

Let's see of course I saw the Avengers, Loved Battleship with Liam Niesson. Probably will see Snow White and The Huntsman. For once Kirsten Stewart won't be her whiny self like she is in the Twilight Films. LOL I stayed away from Dark Shadows as it was more of a mockery of the original show. I always find when they do movies of old tv shows they usually make it some sort of comedy making fun of the show.

Yeah Teddy Pendergrass was all over the radio back in the day.

Dark Shadows opened to very mixed reviews over here, Eman, probably because the original TV show means little to us Brits.
I won't be rushing to see it as Tim Burton's gothic representations of much loved stories or shows has become rather tiresome, I feel.

How I wish the charts today could be filled with Teddy Pendegrass and his like once more!

Thanks for replying! :)

Gray, yeah a little Tim Burton goes a long way, and his "goth vision" for me is a little overkill already.

Hey if you like stuff like Teddy Pendergrass, check out Luther Vandross, Jeffrey Osborne, Freddie Jackson and James Ingram if you haven't.

The only hook I can remember is in the chorus, "think I better let it go, it's looks like another TKO". I don't remember the verses. The song is okay, but I prefer Close the Door, Turn off the Lights, and I Miss You.

I too wish the charts had songs like this in the charts. But there is a retro-soul song in the UK top 10, Too Close by Alex Clare. Every once in awhile something fresh ends up in the chart. I also love Young by Tulisa, which has an infectious hook.

Paul, agree with you I think the term they use today is called "neo-soul" or something to that extent. I'll check out those songs you mentioned.

Hi Jeff

I will also check out those songs, but only if you promise to revisit Love TKO and listen closely to the wonderful verse!

Thanks Eman for your other artist suggestions, I am aware of those top singers :)

Hi Eman

It has taken me some time to track down the Clive Griffin version of Love TKO, and then I have only managed to find a small sound bite, but this tiny, little snippet has confirmed how much I like this song! :)
Also, what a voice Griffin has!
Very powerful of full of soul, will try and track down other works by him.
Thank you.

Hi Gray,
The only thing he released here was his self titled cd "Clive Griffith". I think it's on Amazon for cheap. Yeah he's pretty soulful and it's a shame his music didn't really catch on here, only his duet with Celine Dion.

I know on some tracks Gary Barlow does back up vocals.
