Matt at the Talk of the North Cabaret Club

Post by maureen & harry » Sun Aug 31, 2008 7:07 pm

Hi everyone, sorry for the delay in sending this posting but have been really busy with holidays and decorating etc.

Back in the 60's and 70's we were very fortunate to have quite a lot of Cabaret Clubs in the Manchester Area and many Headliners used to appear in them. Our regular club was the Talk of the North and we always went to see Matt there whenever he was appearing as he was one of the few performers who was asked to go back there on a regular basis.

They were really good places to go for a night out and in those days men were not admitted unless they were wearing a suit and tie and although trouser suits were in fashion for women, these too were not permitted in some venues. Fortunately, around this time, long dresses for ladies were in fashion so it gave us both a chance to dress up in the accepted dress code and enjoy a meal and a nice bottle of wine and then be entertained by the greatest singer in the world - our beloved Matt.

The atmosphere in these clubs created a sense of intimacy as Matt used to go round the dining tables shaking hands with people as he sang and this set the mood for the evening.

If there are any fans out there who remember the Talk of the North please write on the forum and let us know if you also saw Matt there.

We have a few more items to share with you about Matt at "The Talk" but thought we would save these till next time.

With kindest regards,

Maureen & Harry :) :)

Thanks for the story Maureen and Harry,.. that sounds typical of Matt relaxed and down to earth. That's what made him special. As far as dress, we remember when those long dresses came into fashion, and were often worn with a fancy shawl for evenings out.
I wore one for our Silver Wedding Anniversary party.
Anyway... Here's To The Next Time.

Of course it did Robert, but this is the type of ballad singer that Mr Cowell and Co today call cheesy, but then, what does he know ?.... answers on a postcard.
Anything like ours it's in Two short words

Thank you so much for replying to our story of Matt at The Talk of the North.

It's so nice to read all your comments and when we come back from holiday we will post another story so again so watch this space!

Another thing I like about the forum is it gives some of us a chance to walk down memory lane as Lena & I remember those long dresses days with matching shawls which nowadays have been renamed to pashminas. So you younger ones will have to indulge us "golden girls" a little if we digress.

Thank you once again for your feedback, we really do appreciate it.

Cheers! Maureen & Harry
