Paul Newman R.I.P.

Post by Marian » Sat Sep 27, 2008 5:53 pm

One of the Hollywood greats of more recent years, Paul Newman, has passed away aged 83 years. He had been suffering from cancer for some time.
Also a keen motor racing driver, he did a lot for charity in his later life, and put his name to several varieties of his own brand of foodstuffs.
(Bought some of his salad dressing only last week.)

Apparently he died at his home in Connecticut with his family and friends around him.
Marian.

Sad news of Paul Newman,an actor with incredible talent, exceptionally good looking and in spite of those gorgeous blue eyes, he was actually colour blind.
Since 1958, married to actress Joanne Woodward and known to have one of the strongest marriages in the film and showbiz world, he was once asked about any infidelity in his marriage and he replied...why go out for a hamburger when i've got steak at home.

You all may know I am a huge fan of cinema and Paul Newman was a 'great' in my eyes.
He made so many wonderful films, many of them iconic, and seemed to be a really nice fellow along with it.
A true legend, so sad.

A nice tribute to Paul Newman from "The Desert Sun".

Actor, philanthropist Newman dies

Millions from his product earnings given to desert charities

Bruce Fessier
The Desert Sun

Paul Newman, a world-class actor who impacted the world with his philanthropy, died Friday of leukemia at his home in Westport, Conn. He was 83.

His only brother, Arthur, a former Rancho Mirage city councilman, and his wife, Patty, said in a statement from their Rancho Mirage home they are “devastated. There are no words to describe our loss.”

A private memorial service will be held in Connecticut at a later date.

Paul Newman, a native of Shaker Heights, Ohio, near Cleveland, is best known as one of the four most Oscar-nominated actors of all time, behind Jack Nicholson and Laurence Olivier.

Like Spencer Tracy, Newman received nine acting nominations, winning for Best Actor in 1987 for “The Color of Money.”

He also received an honorary Oscar in 1986 and the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Academy Award in 1994. He received a Best Picture nomination in 1968 for “Rachel, Rachel,” which he produced and directed. His wife, Joanne Woodward, starred and Arthur Newman was an associate producer.

But Paul Newman's world stretched well beyond Hollywood. He received a Tony and an Emmy for other acting endeavors. He also was a championship race car driver, entrepreneur and philanthropist, whose Newman's Own Charity Foundation raised more than $250million since its creation in 1982.

Several million of those dollars — raised from the after-tax profits of products such as salad dressing, pasta sauce, popcorn and organic pet food — has been distributed in the Coachella Valley under the direction of his brother and sister-in-law, even though they aren't board members of the foundation Newman created with his friend, writer A.E. Hotchner.

The Stroke Recovery Center in Palm Springs named its small theater for Paul Newman in the 1990s, after Patty and Arthur Newman secured funding for it from Newman's Own. Today, it's used by local performing arts groups for rehearsals and occasional shows.

“He's (Paul) done a lot of nice things for the community through Patty (and Arthur),” said Marilyn Hirshleifer, widow of the center's founder, Irving Hirshleifer.

‘Raised like twins'

The idea for Newman's Own, Paul Newman once said, started as a joke. The actor prided himself on his homemade salad dressing, but abhorred the idea of putting his face on food products. Then he realized the exploitation he often endured to promote Hollywood products could be used to promote charity endeavors.

“We got the whole idea of exploitation and how circular it is,” Newman said. “Why not really go to the fullest length, and the silliest length, in exploiting yourself and turn the proceeds back to the community?”

Newman let his older brother and sister-in-law choose beneficiaries of Newman's Own in the Coachella Valley, Patty Newman said, because of their close relationship.

“Paul and Arthur were raised like twins,” she said, “and have been close for 83 years.”

Paul Newman made two appearances to help his brother get elected to the Rancho Mirage City Council in 1994. He also donated $15,000 to Patty Newman's City Council bid in 2006.

“He came to the Coachella Valley quite a few times,” Patty Newman said, “but, except for a couple of big events, it was very low key, just family business.”

In 2004, Newman surprised his brother with a star in the McCallum Theatre courtyard, presented before 100 people for Arthur's 80th birthday.

“It was a total surprise to Arthur,” recalled Ted Giatas, president and CEO of the McCallum. “Arthur and Paul were very, very close their entire lives. Paul was just a very warm, gracious man when he was there, very approachable — everything you would look for in a fine human being.”

Newman accompanied his brother and sister-in-law to Jackie Lee Houston's first Palm Springs International Film Festival Closing Night Party that same weekend. His friend, Jack Jones of La Quinta, was singing when he saw the Newman brothers sitting stage side.

“I looked down and in the middle of a song I stopped,” recalled Jones. “I said, ‘Arthur, I didn't know you had a brother.' Paul couldn't stop laughing.”

Lending support

Paul Newman showed his support of Patty and Arthur Newman's use of Newman's Own funding to help dozens of local charities with occasional messages.

When the ABC Recovery Center in Indio honored Patty and Arthur Newman for their support of their substance abuse programs, congratulatory telegrams arrived at the gala from the likes of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Rep. Mary Bono Mack.

Paul Newman sent a telegram praising his brother and sister-in-law for their generosity of the community, and said, “I want to thank the powerful forces in the Coachella Valley for keeping them out of jail.”

Actually, Newman's Cathedral City-based friend, Paul White, said Paul was Arthur's straight man when they got together, but both were serious workers for charity.

White met Paul Newman when he was an amateur car racer in the 1980s, and “there was no bigger name in racing than Paul Newman.”

Paul told him he wanted to start a camp for children with blood diseases and White wound up volunteering for his Hole in the Wall Gang Camp in Connecticut. That was the first of five camps developed in the United States with support of the Newman's Own Foundation, White said. There are now five more in Europe and five in development in the United States.

“His words were (in essence), he wanted kids that didn't have an opportunity or had misfortunes to be able to go to camp and raise a little hell like normal kids,” White said from his summer home in Boston. “A lot of them, they had never seen the outside of a hospital.”

Determined to act

Newman's family had no reason to believe he might be such a success after returning from the Navy following World War II.

“I went to Kenyon College (in Ohio) and got thrown in jail and kicked off the football team,” he once told a reporter. “Since I was determined not to study very much, I majored in theater the last two years.”

He did summer and winter stock in Wisconsin after graduation, but returned to Ohio to work in the family sporting goods store after his father died.

Newman had a wife and a child by then, but after a year, he applied to the prestigious Yale Drama School.

It's part of the family lore, said Patty Newman, that Arthur told him, “Why would you want to do that? You're married and have a baby.”

But Paul Newman was admitted to Yale and then to the Actor's Studio, where, like Marlon Brando, he studied acting under Lee Strasberg.

He made his Broadway debut in “Picnic,” earning a 1953 Theatre Award and a movie contract with Warner Bros. His first film, “The Silver Chalice,” was so bad, he took out a full page ad in a trade publication apologizing for it.

He returned to Broadway to star in “The Desperate Hours,” and then signed on to portray boxer Rocky Graziano in what would be his breakthrough film, 1956's “Somebody Up There Likes Me.”

He divorced his first wife, Jacqueline Witte, that year and married Woodward in 1958 after starring with her in “Long Hot Summer.” He also got his first Best Actor Oscar nomination for starring in “Cat On A Hot Tin Roof.”

His brother, Arthur, a business major in college, advised him on investments and held several behind-the-scenes film positions. The man who once wondered why his younger brother wanted to be an actor also did a cameo in “Sometimes a Great Notion.”

George Englund, a close friend with Brando and author of the Brando biography, “The Way It's Never Been Done Before,” said Newman was a “less incendiary” than Brando, but a better Hollywood survivor.

“Paul was a very, very fine movie actor and leading man,” he said. “Marlon was a one-off. He just had more muscle, more daring. I don't want to say he was better. Paul's career was marked by how long it went on and how long he was an icon.

“Usually, you make two pictures that don't gross well and you're on the downhill slide. It didn't happen to Paul.”

Newman's other activities included liberal political causes. Jack Jones met Newman as they campaigned for Democrat presidential contender Eugene McCarthy in 1968. Newman wound up 19th on President Richard Nixon's enemies list, which he considered one of his greatest achievements.

Newman said of gay rights, “There are so many qualities that make up a human being by the time I get through with all the things that I really admire about people, what they do with their private parts is probably so low on the list that it is irrelevant.”

Great relationships

After turning 80, Newman won an Emmy and a Golden Globe for the 2005 HBO drama “Empire Falls” and provided the voice of a 1951 car in the 2006 Disney-Pixar hit, “Cars.”

His 50-year marriage to Joanne Woodward was considered one of Hollywood's great relationships.

dick Taylor, who worked for Newman's publicist, Warren Cowan, visited Newman at his Beverly Hills home several times in the 1980s and saw what a loving relationship Newman and Woodward had.

“From what I saw in the times I was around them, they were a loving couple,” he said. “They really liked each other and had great respect for each other. And the two of them had tremendous respect for each other as actors. They had a great experience in life together, and isn't that fortunate?”

Newman had one son from his first marriage, Scott, who died of a drug overdose in 1978. Newman responded by founding the Scott Newman Foundation to produce anti-drug films for children.

Besides Joanne and his brother, Arthur, survivors include his daughters Susan, Stephanie, Nell, Lissy and Clea; two grandsons and one niece.
