Enjoyed this show with nice guy singer and entertainer Val and the story of how his career took off, the songs that he made his own and many reminders and comments from entertainers, singers and DJs that he worked with.
Liked the skit on Roy Plumleys "Desert Island discs" with old time comedian, the late Arthur Askey. A funny and sharp witted comic.
A medley of songs with Nana Maskouri, altogether a nice programme.

I missed it in the end! What a shame - sounds like a good programme! Val has such a calmness about him. Nice to see his long career recognised.

Arthur Askey I can just about remember  he used to turn up on Royal Variety shows a lot, I think he was a favourite of the Queen Mums wasn't he? Now of course, the 'Fast Show' did a parody of all those wonderful 1940s shows, with the 'wheres me washboard' punchline!

I have watched the Val Doonican Rocks programme and thought it was great and really interesting. I think it is a shame his shows ended, Saturday nights ain't what they used to be unfortunately. Have yet to see the show from 1976 but I am sure it will be just as enjoyable. :) :)

Also saw this show. Val looked really well for his age when interviewed and it's clear he has a positive take on life. Used to enjoy watching his Saturday night shows when I was younger and he sang some nice songs in addition to the more humorous ones. Don't worry, Mike - I'm sure the programme will be repeated, and probably on BBC2, where many of the BBC4 programmes are later shown. I think the recent documentary on Matt - "The Man with the Golden Voice" - was first shown on BBC4 before being taken up by BBC2.

Morning all,

Just a message to say that Val will be the special guest on the David Allen radio show this coming Saturday night.

David's show goes out at 9pm and Val should be on at around 10.30pm.
To listen to the show either live or to use the "listen again" feature, please visit the BBC Radio Berkshire/Oxford/Southern Counties or Solent websites.

David also has a Sunday show but Val will be on his Saturday show.
Happy listening everyone.

:D :)

I just noticed that Val Doonican is in the top 40 on today's midweek album chart. Does he have a new release?

Apparently there is a new compilation cd out Paul, "The very best of Val Doonican", released on 29th September. I couldn't see it on the chart list though. Is it on the easy listening charts?
