Went to see the new Batman film last night, I really, really, really wanted to love it, but I cannot say that I did.

It is very ambitious, it attempts to mix politics and finance and other such ideals of a modern world with a man running round in a bat suit.

But it fails when it looks at the little picture: the small plot devices used to push the story along are either silly or plain unbelievable, and there are many mistakes within it.
I did enjoy it's grandeur, it is huge in scope, but alas winced at the errors.
Shame really.
Poor villain as well.

Gray, most reviews I've read are in argeement with you. They said either you love it or loathe it. I guess I'm the minority because I loved and loathed it. A little dark, and a tad too long. Though I have to give props to Anne Hathaway as Catwoman and also Michael Cain.

Still working my way though Season one on Mannix. They are from 1967, one episode had a very young Neil Diamond singing in a night club.

Hi Eman, the film reminded me of a Lawrence of Arabia, or a Zulu, an old fashioned type of massive production - huge crowd scenes, running battles, the 'Gotham vistas' - all of that I liked.

But it was the silly things like (WARNING!! plot spoilers here) the people trying to escape from the pit/prison. The individual attempting had a rope attached on a pulley system. Question: Why not simply pull each other up and out?

How did a certain character get half way across the world, with no money/passport, from a prison to Gotham after escaping?

Why did Batman need Catwoman to take him to Bane when he knew (because Comm. Gordon had seen the underground activity and the information passed to Wayne) where he was all the time?

How can you park a bat plane in open sight Gotham and it not get discovered?

How can 3,000 people survive for 3 months buried underground, only then to emerge without even the slightest 5 o'clock shadow?

If Catwoman's profile and real name was all all over the interpol website why did only Bruce Wayne know where she lived?

How does dead of night turn to midday in less than 45 minutes? (Comm. Gordon walks across the ice in pitch black night, minutes later Catwoman blasts a hole in the underground to release the trapped. The released are then shown blinking in daylight in preparation for the big fight)

All these things really bugged me, as I enjoyed the hugeness of the production, it's ambition really impressed me.

Gray, those things went through my mind also while watching the film and that's part of the reason I loathed the movie, because of the loose ends and questions that went through the mind. I guess the producers thought that maybe " a thinking audience" wouldn't watch it. However I don't think this one is gonna go on my DVD/Blu-Ray shelf when it comes out. I hope when the new Superman movie comes out it's much better than this one.

Speaking of, I did get to see a special screening of "The Expendables 2". They showed it here on base before it's release later this month. It's a good mindless big bam boom of explosives like the last one with hardly no plot, but I enjoyed it since I'm a big Jason Statham fan!!

Hey Grey it's only a movie, it's fiction!!!!! I know what you mean though continuity is important. I once watched a Bruce Willis movie on tv, in one scene his car was being stolen. He came out his bedroom pulling a shirt on,by the time he got downstairs it was buttoned, would you bother doing that if some b****r was stealing your car? I DON'T THINK SO!!!!! I know I wouldn't.

How did someone get halfway across the world with no money or passport you ask, it must have been the 11 year old boy from Manchester!!!!!! Maybe that's where he got the idea?

HI Eman

I saw a trailer for Expendables 2 before the film last night and burst out laughing when I saw Arnie open the car door, stick his head out and announce, "I'm back!!""
:)

Hey Karl,
I love cinema, well used to, but I don't think it's much of an art form anymore, but anyhow, movies are important to me, sometimes I do get over excited!
My wife tells me I should write a book on cinema - I am considering doing it.
Yes, you are right though, never thought of the 11 year old boy and the plane trip he took, strike that from my list of errors from the Dark Knight Rises! :)

Just watched Rope - vintage Hitchcock from 1948 - on dvd.
Even an average 'Hitch' is light years ahead of anyone around today.

I often think modern day movies rely too much on special effects and not enough on the actual acting.

Last year in Australia I was browsing in a large record store and they were playing the latest blockbuster on the tv - what a noise, I think it was one of those transformer movies. I just about had a headache by the time I left.

Hi Gray, watched "Total Recall" on Saturday. My review is "Don't bother". Another movie hyped on special effects with plot next to zero. I'd rather watch a Transformers film than this. For me it was just ghastly, but the kids seem to enjoy it!!

So from the trailer Total Recall looks like a shot for shot remake of the Arnie version. Was the whole movie like that?

Mike, basically yes, but for me it was really "dumbed down" for today's generation of the more effects and less plot the better.

Who ever thought Total Recall could be dumbed down? They'll do Weekend At Bernie's next.
