This reading made sense !!. We have all marvelled at previous opening Olympic ceremonies, in particular Beijing but Brian Reade column writer for the "Daily Mirror" got it right when he said...never has our nation seen it's story told so passionately, poignantly and originally and on such an epic jaw-dropping scale.
He then went on to say that it wasn't like Beijing that cost hundreds of millions of pounds to try and show the world that China was a super power capable of drilling it's people with military precision into a synchronised fist.
He said it was a celebration of our history, our genius, our tolerance and all that we have given to the world, but most of all it showed humour.
He was right of course. Military and precision we leave to our wonderful British forces and the Queens Guards that no country can compete with.
There were one or two minor hiccups during the show, but who cares. :) :)

I think it is excellent that this year, every event is being filmed, and all available to watch--via the Red Button.

But I have just found out that you can do away with faffing about with the Red Buttin--if you have Sky. Just go directly to the Sports section from the main menu---then scroll down, tilll you come to numbers 452 onwards, which are all the Olympic channels--all clearly marked what is on which channel [about 20 channels]and when--plus if you have a Sky plus box, you can record any sport you want, while watching another.

I think also if you have Freesat and Virgin, if you just enter the number that is in the tv times for the sport you want, it should come up directly-although I tried it with freeview and did not get anything.

I taped 2 sports this afternoon while I was out, so i know it works with Sky,

GOING FOR GOLD

I think I should preface this post by lapsing
into cliche: 'If you can't beat 'em join 'em.'
The English Table Tennis Association currently
promotes international octogenarian matches.
As a callow septuagenarian myself I am far too young
to qualify; however, I look forward the time when
I can represent England - from what I've seen
in the film on the subject, Ping Pong, the competition
holds no terrors for me.
When I mentioned my aspirations down the pub
they said they could picture the scene: me among decrepit
old dodderers knocking balls to and fro on a table tennis
table with a phalanx of trainers and medics standing by
and armed to the the teeth with defibrillators, CPR
equipment etc.

PS I didn't post this on the joke thread
for fear of jeopardising the Hospice votes.

Thanks guys. I hope I am never called upon
to operate a defibrillator - I have enough trouble
trying to spell it.

I felt sorry om Saturday for Maria Sharapova after her big loss to Serena Williams...6-0, 6-1 (Whew!)

In spite of all the apprehension about these Olympic games and the moaning from many, surely these games in London will go down as the best in history.
We are enjoying every minute and from the atmosphere at every venue so are thousands more.
Up to now America leading and Great Britain. 14 Gold 7 Silver and 8 Bronze medals.
Come on Andy, you can do it today !!!
True to form our GB football team blew it with a penalty shoot out. :(

ISLES of WONDER

Their start was worryingly slow;
for days no gold garland to show;
we wondered - were they able?
They were building a head of steam
and then this great Great Britain team
zoomed up the medals table.
Crowned with a night of celebration
for this bankers-browbeaten nation.

All of England must have been praying for Andy Murray this morning......
I am watching the Olympic Tennis Finals on TV and Andy Murray has just won over Roger Federer: 6-2,6-1,6-4
Unbelievable!! Congrats to Andy.....He really deserved this win and a Gold Medal for the U.K.
